New The PC Build Thread

Hi everyone, hope you’re all good.

I have decided that it’s time to move over to AM5 and get a 9800X3D. I have not kept up with motherboards/ chipsets and coolers. Recommendations please? I like the aesthetic of the Sapphire motherboards @Fulcrum29 posted but I guess those won’t be available locally?

I’m a fan of reading things like “all Japanese capacitors” on the box but I also don’t want to overspend on things I don’t need.
I am in the same boat. Posted on Carb to get some advice there. I am out of my depth with AMD.

Since its a 9800x3d, you're going high end i assume. GPU?

If you're going for multiple nvme drives, then do your homework on the motherboards.

Most the boards with 3+ m.2 slots share some lanes with the pcie4x16 slot, plugging drives into the specific m.2's that share it drops the gpu slot down to x8 speed.

Can get away with it not gimping the gpu if you only use the main nvme slot from cpu and plug a secondary into a m.2 from the chipset. The rest into an extra pcie slot via adapter(s).

I am looking for a Mobo that doesnt do this. I read the AsRock Nova does not. BUT, ofcourse, cant find it :D

It seems ID-Cooling will start to sell its X45 thermal paste without being exclusive to their AIO coolers (bundled). Though it seems to be limited to the USA at this stage.

Stopped by and nabbed my 9800X3D from @Progenix Oj101 - TYVM!
Just need to find this somewhere a bit more saner-priced, if you could help me out. (nudge nudge)
230 dollar motherboard that's selling for near 7K here at some stores..

I would consider this board:

Any of these:

at 3x the listed price. Seems like a deal for ME :D

I have the Asus Prime Wifi X670 on one of my systems. Wonderful board for under R6k with enough slots and dedicated lanes.

I would consider this board:

PCIE config here is trash.
Gen 4 on the 16x slot.
The other two '16x' slots are actually just Gen3 x1.
While I really want a gigabyte motherboard, the only board that kinda fits what I'm trying to do here is the MSI X870P Wifi
I *need* at least a spare Gen3 x4 slot that doesnt overlap a GPU, that doesn't get turned off when using 2x NVME drives, or suck lanes from the GPU like some Asus boards.

Quickly need some advice. Considering getting this to replace my i3 7th gen and 8 GB RAM. Should I go for it? Btw this is within my budget.

Already have 550W PSU and RX 580 4GB.

Edit: https://progenix.co.za/Upgrade-Kits...e-Kit?refine=price[3319,7915],stock_status[7]

Found something at an even better price point. How's this? And what's the general experience with Progenix with you guys?

Happy to vouch for Progenix.
Not sure what your budget is, but if you've got a GPU, don't waste money on a graphics-enabled processor.
Rather look at : https://progenix.co.za/Computers/Up...MAX-II-Motherboard-16GB-DDR4-3200-Upgrade-Kit

Ah, it is for the storage config. Yeah, I went with the X870E Aorus Elite because it is the best value X870E on the market. Spec wise I am bamboozled why the other brands can't offer similar value. AI is not a selling point for me. Everyone who reviewed the Aorus boards gave it s super approval.

The X870 is essentially the product that displaced the B650/E with or without subtle upgrades pending on the board, evaluating it on features. I am curious how the actual B850 boards will be like.

With the X870E I have two useable M.2 slots, M2A and M2D. You can't use M2B and M2C without cutting the PCI-E lane. Only the more expensive boards either come with an expansion card or with SlimSAS.

On my list of two South African retailers, Progenix is on the list.

as @Faux_Grey said, go for the 5500 cpu combo instead, that 16mb L3 cache makes a huge difference vs the measly 4mb on the 3400g

And as always, dual channel ram, AMD hates single sticks of ram. (well it will work, just you lose so much performance)

If I'm brutally honest, IDK if I care that much about how much "performance" will be lost, since:
  • As long as it runs better than my i3 is rn
  • I can at least game properly at 1080p Low
  • Run CS2 without the lagging I have now
If I can do all those, I'm honestly happy, with or without dual channel...
