I want to build a new PC. Budget around R30k I think? I am really out of touch with the flavor of the month atm. Need something that can last me a good few years. ATM I am using an I5-7500 with 32gb ram and GTX1060
Just the PC no screens or anything.

What would you guys suggest? Parts wise.
I want 64 GB of memory. I don't game ATM so not too worried about a moerse graphics card. I do however use 3 x screens so the GPU should be kind of decent. I also need the MB to have an HDMI port and onboard WI-FI with optical out, Asus preferably.
I have a nvme drive for my OS already.

So basically I need a CPU, GPU, MB, PSU, RAM, Case. That's it I think. Not going all RGB style. Just plain black or white. Or the new wood-look cases.

All suggestions are welcome.

Never had an AMD before. Not sure if I want to go down that route. Is there a new lineup of Intel's on the way?
Or would a 12-13th gen CPU be fine?

You won't even know the difference. There's nothing you have to do. Only thing that will change is it will say AMD processor instead of Intel processor in your system info.

Firstly, don't buy old CPUs. If you wanna do that then just buy a secondhand PC on carbonite instead and save a ton of cash.

Secondly, stay far away from Intel. Their CPUs are failing at an alarming rate and they are denying RMA requests. Just read the last couple pages of this thread.

If you want to buy Intel then wait for the microcode update. I suggest a upper end AMD AM5 chip with a water cooler though.

I'm pretty sure that microcode will gimp intel's CPUs if it has any chance of working.

Intel has known about this problem for years and would have fixed it already if it was achievable without severe performance reduction.

Yeah agreed.

Looks like the new 9950X AM5 will be my next buy. I'm inclined to a Gigabyte Aorus Pro X mainboard - what other suggestions / experiences do you have about AM5 mainboards? I plan on keeping this rig for 5 years minimum.
 
Reading this thread makes me regret building a new 14th gen i5 build

Built a i5 14500 PC for office use and I built it before this instability issues became a thing (was planning on using a 12400 but picked this instead )

Don’t use it for gaming or any heavy loads basically does ms office handles being a pastel accounting server and general pc use

Would it be fine in the long run or do I genuinely have a problem possibly in the future ?

When it comes to motherboards I'd say avoid wasting money on expensive boards.

Most important to me is thermal performance. You don't want a board that runs hot.

I start by finding the chipset that suits the CPU I wanna buy and my personal needs (overclocking/undervolting support, PCIe lanes etc) and check out roundup reviews that include VRM temperature. Hardware unboxed does a great job of this.


That already reduces the pool of possible boards by a lot. At this stage I usually take the cheaper of the well performing boards and compare I/O and other specs/features I might make use of like number of M.2 slots, sound card quality, onboard wifi support, power consumption and so on to make a final decision.

It will last a few years. If you're unlucky you might start getting BSOD's.

This is what I had in mind. And now all these issues come out.

I haven't specced a PC in fsck knows how many years. And now that I want to there is a decision to be made by going Intel or AMD. WTF?
 
Or must I just wait it out for few months?

How unfortunate the last Intel pc lasted 13 years before getting too slow to bare

Was on the fence on going with Intel or AMD , probably should have gone Ryzen as my Ryzen 7 5700x is been good .

So Intel is refusing RMAs and offering a microcode update which also has no guarantee of success??

I wish I could return all of it but I built it like 3 months ago , if it failed now should have the CPA cover me
