New The PC Build Thread

Yeah didn't do too bad, all things considered, RX470 is the above the min requirements for development software, and has drivers for win 10 and win 11.

I am still thinking about what I am going to do OS wise with the backup PC, I am actually temped to go back to windows 7. But it will be an offline PC then, it is running 10, which means I can still use it online for a good while still...... It is a i7 4770k with 16gig ram, bit worried it might run like a dog on win 11.
What about something Linux-flavoured?

We have an i7 3770 with 16 gig that's been on Windows 11 for years. Upgraded it to 25h2 last week. Still works fine. I did not notice any delays or lagging after going from win 10 to 11...

You might not have noticed it, even on Windows 10, there is a difference in CPU usage between the old and new rig, with basic windows tasks. I have a i5 14400 with 32gig ram for the main rig, so I can tell there is a difference. 4 cores 8 thread versus 10 cores, 16 threads and a much larger cache.

While you might not notice it. I do, there is quite a bit of lag and delay. I also had to give up quite a bit of software compatibility, moving to Windows 10 and now Windows 11.

Just going to wait for PSU and GPU to arrive, then try 11 and see if it floats my boat, what is the worst than can happen.Steam will still support win10 for sometime, steam supported windows till jan 2024. So there is no rush to jump the win 10 doom and gloom ship yet, other than the annoying win 11 upgrade pop ups....

The New PSU shipped this evening and the GPU should be shipped out tomorrow. So hopefully by Friday I am good and sorted. Hopefully I didn't make a bad choice with the RX470, it isn't the latest and greatest, but should get the job done, anything is better than iGPU

Not sure I understand what you are saying. My main rig is an AMD 5600x with 64 gig ram. It is significantly faster than the i7 3770, but that is to be expected, given the +- 10 age difference...

I am saying using the 4770K there is a lot more CPU overhead using windows, multitasking becomes an issue on the older CPUs in windows. Development work flow has several programs open along with a given browser, add the windows overhead to the mix, it isn't as snappy as I would like it, not sure how I managed it all these years.

Windows 11 has a slightly higher CPU overhead on older systems compared to Windows 10. I am picky, shyte just needs to work, open and do as told, I am old and impatient, and well past my sell by date. If can sit and pluck grey nose hairs waiting for something, it is ewaste :p

Odd, the 5700x3d and intel arc b580 uses as much power as my 9700x and 9070.

9700x is only 65W. X3D is 105W. Don't know what Intel is. 9070 is 300W full load less if you "Let Windows Decide".

Should be about the same(ish) yeah.

Yeah, the 9070 is 220 and the Arc B580 is supposed to be 190 max. Forgot the x3d uses 105. I guess flipping the 9700x over to 105w mode would make it use more.

You can but no really no need to do that.

Personally I'd rather it run cooler.

Can always up it when you need a bit of extra juice come the 2026/27 Unreal iteration of ****ups.

Yea with pbo enabled it will jump to 148w or even 170w max if teally worked hard

now yes gaming it will be less than that

Tdp is often nowhere near the actual power cpu's use normally more like how much heat they will disipate

TDP stands for "thermal design point/power" all power (input) provided to the CPU is dissipated as heat(wattage), this value is given in watts, in this case 170 watts. To get the BTU multiply its wattage by 3.412.

Antec Atom v650 watt arrived today. Decent enough quality, it is in no way or form suited to modern builds, something I mentioned before. It is great for older systems and GPU's. Not my first, second or 3rd choice, for the budget it will get the job done,

Nah it is more of a case I got screwed over last month with having to replace my power supply that threw a spanner in the works and needing to get as screen and a GPU for the back up system.

Sigh, now I have to get a new case month as I'm using a Half sized Matx case with a CM hyper 212 tower cooler that is a beast. Nearly no room in the case for airflow, cabling is a mess as there is zero space for it to go.

Was also planning on replacing HDDs at some point. Need 3 HDDS.

All that is left of my upgrade list is
Case
HDD's

This little upgrade adventure was supposed to be, 7500k, it is closer to 15k now as of today. Fck me

yea busy ordering stuff for my wifes pc so my lego will start tommorow haven't ordered the cpu yet still thinking , such a fine line not to waste money and later feeling damn i should have gone bigger

the bonus of going all out
if you feel wished it could be quicker
at least you know there wasn't better options

edit : this could make building in a small case a breeze, but no Sata
slightly bigger the BD795m at least has 2 sata
really wanted to buy one of these but yea no upgrade path
