Hi,
I am here to ask for opinions and advice regarding ADSL.
I'm currently using pre-paid mobile broadband, but would really like to switch to ADSL.
I'm looking at the Simple uncapped plus package from Telkom, as i dint have spare cash for the 1200 installation they want to charge me at the Direct store.
I would like to know, 1)is this a 24month contract deal i have to sign with them? 2)I'm renting an appartment, in the instance that I want to move before the contract has expired, what happens to my subscription? would i have to pay for installation at thenew residence then, or how does it work? 3)they include a 3g dongle, as I'm using a desktop PC, i wont need it, do I have to take it, or can this be left out and maybe reduce the pricing? 4) are there any hidden costs such as line deposit of 700 rand, as I have read numerous threads of people paying double the first month.

I would like to keep my line-rental and ISP from Telkom as this makes things simpler, and the mentioned package is at a fair price.

I would appreciate if you guys can answer me in this, and have any advice or suggestions.

Thanks in advance

Go for the Simple uncapped package.

https://secureapp.telkom.co.za/camp...ent=january2013&utm_Simple&productName=Simple

You don't need to pay the installation fee if you are a new adsl customer.
Apply for a calling plan and they do the install for free.
Choose self-install for the adsl router.

It is not a contract.
You cannot leave the dongal.
They give you 500mb free credit for the dongle.
The dongle plugs into your adls router and is used as a failsafe.
I don't use it, still sitting in my drawer.

There are no hidden costs.

It is a great package imo.
I use the 2mb uncapped quite happily.
Apply for the 25% discount once you are up and running to reduce the cost even more.
I get about R90 off a month which brings it to about R560 or so.

Thanks for the quick reply.
The one you mentioned is the same one I'm interested in. 2Mbps uncapped.
Just the one question, in the instance that I have to move, what happens to my line rental etc.?

No, its not a contract at all.

2)I'm renting an appartment, in the instance that I want to move before the contract has expired, what happens to my subscription? would i have to pay for installation at thenew residence then, or how does it work?
You can apply for them to move your line to your new place

3)they include a 3g dongle, as I'm using a desktop PC, i wont need it, do I have to take it, or can this be left out and maybe reduce the pricing?
Not taking it won't be reducing the price. Take it, sell it, or whatever. Its free :)

4) are there any hidden costs such as line deposit of 700 rand, as I have read numerous threads of people paying double the first month.
No hidden costs whatsoever. However is you have a lowish credit rating they might ask you to pay the R700, however, that money is then allocated to your account.

I would like to keep my line-rental and ISP from Telkom as this makes things simpler, and the mentioned package is at a fair price.
Great advice

Hi There,
Seems you are pretty settled on the Telkom deal.
Did you have a look at what Afrihost can also offer?
They run a month to month solution and will manage the line as well.
I use it at home and had no issues

Regards

Hi guys,

I was on the 1MB deal with Telkom, worked well except that my landline was so bad, the sound was very poor (scratching sound over line). We've lodged this with Telkom, informed the technicians, but nothing has been done to date (3 months later).

The technician informed us that there was a similiar complaint from the area and that was not resolved yet.

My question is this:
Can I change to a different ISP that can pay my ADSL line-rental, and place my landline on hold while Telkom sort this out? I.E. Have ADSL with an ISP without the Telkom landline?

Any advice guys?

Dont think its possible, last time i checked telkom will not allow a ADLS line if you dont have/pay your normal telephone line

Thanks guys.
This pretty much sucks as the landline is useless. The sound quality is worse than a 2-way radio on a construction site (and I never understand what people say over that 2-way radio).

Anyway, I'll sort it out. Thanks.
