Hey All

Have just applied for my 20mbs VDSL line. I have a few questions if anyone could answer.

1. Is it normal to lose all connection after applying, I now have no ADSL or VDSL sync on my line, I phoned telkom and they said this is normal and will take upto 24 hours to restore connection. Before applying for it line was connected and working fine.

2. The Mweb Techinicolor Routers are VDSL according to the box, will this work fine for the line, if so it is just a stop gap till I get a proper VDSL modem?

3. If i was still using a normal adsl Router (Draytek Vigor 2820n) will this still connect to the VDSL port at ADSL speeds? or just fail?

Thanks

Dylan

Some really good questions. I would also like to know the answers.

Regarding the MWEB router - I recommend flashing the stock firmware. There's a thread somewhere on these forums explaining the procedure.

Has the line been upgraded yet? If so you may lose connectivity - it is seen as a new order and the service will therefore not be activated automatically.

1) Yes it is normal, a technician has to physically take you off the exchange for a ADSL port and then re-enlist you on a VDSL port. Sadly telkom technicians work between 12 and 1 pm. I wouldn't hope for a 24 hour move to VDSL.

2) If it is VDSL2 compatible then you should be fine.

3) In this context, No. VDSL and ADSL2+ have different connectivity and bandwidth architectures. Most VDSL2 routers are backwards compatible with ADSL2+, so your best bet is to just buy a VDSL2 router and make sure it is backwards compatible. (You will end up saving money and time in the long run)

VDSL2 routers can handle up to 100 mb sync. VDSL can sync at a lower speed - 10,4,2 mb. But a ADSL2+ can only sync up to around 22mb. Reason to why I'm saying this, is you could potentially sort something with telkom, they could try sync your VDSL line to a lower speed.

Thanks all for your responses.

Got some feedback from MWEB about the Fon routers and they do support VDSL. Good start, from here it goes downhill, still have no line sync even after Telkom phoned and said that my order has been completed. So have logged a fault to get this sorted out!

Contemplating going back to ADSL if it takes more than 3 days to get sorted as I am now on my backup LTE connection and have limited data!
