Our Samsung washing machine looks to have finally started giving up on working life with leaks popping up sporadically and me having to remove panels to get the door open after the plastic door release broke clean off yesterday.

I haven't bought a washing machine in years, what should I be looking out for when looking for a new one? Friends have mentioned we are mad to not have a washer/dryer combo but I have never seen the need as we live in Johannesburg? I have a preference for Bosch as the bulk of our current home appliances are Bosch and they are brilliant.

My folks recently bought a 6kg Bosch direct drive front loader (or whatever they brand it as) and they are very happy with it. A few months later, I managed to snag an LG 8kg Direct Drive front loader for little over R5000 from House & Home which has been superb thus far. I personally stay very far away from Defy as their quality has gone down the tubes since they were acquired by that other Turkish company.

The Hisense 8kg front loader also looks like a very nice deal, and they are frequently on special:

Bosch

Avoid Samsung washer/dryer combo. We have one. It wastes huge amounts of water on the dryer function. It breaks constantly.

Avoid Samsung and Defy. Bosch or Whirlpool in my opinion. Our Whirlpool 6th Sense front loader running flawlessly for 8 years now.

Thanks for all the feedback and suggestions, Bosch is my preferred brand at the moment, just not sure what features I should look out for specifically? I'll go to Stax in Dunkeld tomorrow to have a look at this and what else they have, I am more inclined to buy larger capacity to prevent my girlfriend from overloading the machine...

Things dry quickly up here.

I'd say more important decisions to make than manufacturer is load size and top or front loader. I wash at least 2 loads daily with my Defy top loader. It's a machine!!! (no pun intended)
Most brands will last long if you maintain them properly - I take good care of my appliances, unlike @RedViking

Yeah, my parents have a dryer but they live in Ballito, I have never seen the need up in Johannesburg.

We only have under counter space so front loader it is and I would prefer larger load rating despite it just being myself and girlfriend in the house. She tends to squash as much as she can fit in the machine and I am surprised the current one has lasted 8 years as i am sure it must have been overloaded countless times.

I would like to think I take good care of my appliances, I certainly do compared to my girlfriend, domestic and gardener.

I'd 100% recommend this washing machine. Mine has less capacity (6kg), but its brilliant. Be ready to be amazed how little electricity it uses. Would never look beyond Bosch when it comes to washing machines.

But I buy at garage sales and get stuff that was taken without compensation.

Don't buy a Whirlpool. Decent quality buy too noisy.

Don't buy a Samsung. Their quality of appliances are mediocre.

Bosch has excellent customer service.

LG washing machines and fridges are good.

I have noticed Whirlpool makes good quality products. Their washing machines are too noisy thou.

Thanks. Our Bosch dishwasher is brilliant and well worth the price we paid after the previous Samsung finally gave up.

I had an unfortunate incident with a Whirlpool oven a few years back and never managed to get the correct replacement part despite trying 6 or 7 times with Tecsa. Whirlpool support was useless so I made a plan with R15 worth of Builders Warehouse nuts, bolts and washers. The experience put me off Whirlpool products.

My Bosch has been flawless for the past 7 years. Defy are getting worse in terms of quality and service.
