Im a complete newbie in this. Dont even know if its possible. Heres my break down.
I have my shop, my house and my brothers house. Want to link them up via Long range Wifi. Below is 2 scenarios.
1. Is my house
2. My brother House
3. The shop

Distance from house to Shop is about 1.5KM. House to House around 300m. Alot of trees in the area.

Scenario A

Shop is central point. Both houses connect to the shop. but from point 2 to 3 There is no LOS. Point 1 to 3 there is LOS but i have to about 5 metre higher than roof height which is already 2 floors high.

Scenario B

My house is central point. Shop and my brothers house connects to me. Point 1 to 3 there is LOS but i have to about 5 metre higher than roof height which is already 2 floors high. Point 1 to 2 there is no LOS as my grandfathers house is blocking it.

I have no idea where to start. i went on the shop roof with binoculars to see if i can see the the house, and thats all i have done. Do you guys think this is possible as the distance is not that much. Is there any way i can link up without LOS. I heard that on 2.4ghz i might get a decent signal with NLOS. I want to run it as a closed single network between the 3 points. Want to be able to access my point of sale server from the house via normal file sharing, stream from the office server to my PS3, etc...

Ive spent hours on different forums and the internet trying to figure. But with my limited experience i get lost :)
Looking for a cheap workable option.

Buy 3 x UBNT Nanobridges, point the one at the shop between the two houses. Point the two houses at the shop.
Put up as tall a pole as possible at the shop. Place shop radio in AP-WDS, and the two house radios in STATION-WDS.

1.5km - should be no issues.

It is legal as long as you do not share internet publicly. It does sound possible, distances are not a problem, only the trees. The 2.4GHz is the best as 5.8Ghz does not work well with trees.

I would say look at the nano stations from ubiquity, they are relatively cheap and easy to set up.

My only reservation would be distance, they die off very quickly in my experience. I hug my nanobridges every day :p

So I should get hold of nanabridges, but the 2.4 not 5.8

Ideally you would need to check the saturation of 2.4ghz in your area. Trees are a problem - but not if you are mainly going over them.
Perhaps others can comment on the benefits. I only run 5.8 - the one link I do have on 2.4 is slow due to interference from other 2.4 equipment.

Best option would to find someone with some equipment and test?

I'm actually thinking 8dbi might be too little, maybe 12dbi or up. So many factors to add in :P

So would the NanoBRIDGE or NanoSTATION be better? Im guessing my only option is the 2.4 as there are way too many trees for the 5.8. One more thing, what about lightning?

Nanobridge is the better device. Lightning, what's that? - I live in Cape Town!

i would just try a couple of yagi antennas on two 2.4 WIFI access points and see if you get comms move them around with long cables . not to long . 1.5 KM is nothing for a decent yagi antenna
