Please help. I have been using Mweb's news server, but the speed just gets worse by the day. I'll rather pay in a fee monthly get get better speeds.

I use NZBMatrix with GrabIt.

Any suggestions? Which news servers offer good value for money?

Thanks!

Newsdemon or Astraweb. I'm with Newsdemon now: 200GB for $22. I found the uncapped accounts a waste.

I'd say start off with a cheap account with an international provider, something like 10GB once-off. This will allow you to confirm whether Mweb's Usenet server is screwed, or their NNTP shaping is responsible for your slow speeds.

I recall having to jump through hoops to get around their NNTP shaping, signing up with providers who offered HTTP access, and then hacking together a method of using a download manager to pull stuff through. Eventually decided that it wasn't worth the effort and changed ISPs.

Agreed. I left Mweb end of 2010 after their "network upgrade" shaped Astraweb to 20 KBps. Ymmv.

Use Sabnz, grabit and altbinz is way behind with what sabnz offer :P

i use newsdemon unlimited for 10 dollars a month, comes with 30gb online storage also.

You can check out Xsusenet, they offer 1mb speed for free with 600days retention, works find on Telkom 384kps line when you what to grab something old.

Tried the Xsusenet and it was working fine before, but since yesterday the speeds are terrible!

I just signed up for newsdemon. Speed is great! Really like it. Hope it stays good! I also got a good deal. First month is $7 and then $10 unlimited.

Astraweb has really good retention as well. Only thing I don't like is that multiple connections are not allowed. My brother at home downloads what he wants and I download what I want here, but we both can't connect using Astraweb at the same time. Does any of the other usenet providers offer multiple/simultaneous connections?

from Astraweb website

Maximum Connections:
20 connections

Astraweb supports 20 simultaneous SSL connections.

Why dont you set max to 10 your side and max to 10 his side

:)

That's what I thought, and I already tried that. It only allows the simultaneous connections to be made from one IP address. I tried the 10 connections thing and it doesn't work. When it detects two different IP addresses, you get a message in your newsreader saying something to the effect of multiple logins not allowed and that it is already connected at IP xxxxxxxxxx

with newsdeamon i just tested using the eu address with 10 conntections at home and work with usa address both downloaded on the same account.

Could just be a bug, doubt that it should be shareable.

proxy server, then Astraweb will see one IP and you can both download via 10 connections SSL each

:D

I use newsgroupdirect.com I buy 1TB for $100 but if you clever you will sign up for their news letter and around about once a month they have a special where you can get 1TB of download data for only $50. They call this special TB Tuesday and is well worth the money.

Also set up your news reader in a way so you save on data downloads, for example on my download server I have my primary news account set to my ISP and my free news accounts set as primary. If these accounts are not working or if they dont have the content it then downloads from my "backup account" which is my paid for accounts. In other words I hardly ever use my 1TB which never expires because it only is used when the download is over 200 days old for example or has been deleted. Just a thought ;)

SABNZbD FTW!
