Does anyone know of free news servers that can be used to download nzb's via 8ta on 3g.

Extract from a talk given to the Cape Computer Club about accessing newsgroups

How to access USENET and read newsgroups

Inquire with your ISP whether they can provide access to Newsgroups. If so, they will give you the address of the newsgroup server that they use

A typical example is: nntp.mweb.co.za. Port 119

To read the TEXT version of newsgroups, you can use (any of) the email program that you are familiar with. In the Accounts section of the email program will be a section to fill in the newsgroup server and the port it uses. This is what your ISP will have given you

If your ISP cannot provide a newsgroup server, there is one free one that anyone can access. Using your web browser, go along to http://www.xsusenet.com and sign up for a free account. They will email you the Port(s), your user name and a password.

Enter this into the email program you will be using, click on Newsgroups in the program and go and fetch the List of available newsgroups. There are about 95000 on xsusenet.com

In the newsgroup window list is a space where you can enter the name of a newsgroup you are interested in. In the example below, I put “cats” in the space where it says: Display newsgroups that contain:

Click on the name of the newsgroup and click on “Subscribe”.

When you have selected the groups you fancy, click on OK

Then, click on the individual list on the left. Depending on what email reader you are using, it will either go and fetch the latest headers (beware to just fetch a sample, sometimes there are over 2 million messages in a popular group) or you must tell the program to fetch a sample of messages

To view the message BODY, click on the message HEADER

To download BINARY attachments (which are contained in newsgroups having the title “binary” in their list), you will need a reader capable of decoding binary attachments. Email readers cannot do this. You need a program like FREE AGENT, which is not free.

Beware of porn and smut. At least 50% of the newsgroups contain this.

Telkoms news server works fine for me on 8ta 3G (news.telkomsa.net)

News.saix.net used to work. I've been unable to connect for about 2 weeks now.
Anyone else has such issues?

Hi Bivesh

We have been interacting with SAIX since these threads have requested it and they have agreed to allow 8ta to use news.saix.net and we are not sure when the firewall changes will be implemented, but this will be soon. We will be testing this week and let you know.

Thanks.
Looking forward to having it work again.

Getting the old problem - thought it was fixed.
Error 497 permission denied. :(

Hi there

The IP ranges we have was not all included in the firewall access configuration. We have requested them to update this with our IP ranges in order to allow all 8ta users to access it.

Quoted from the other news server thread.....
I am definitely finding an issue with this.

I frequently experience access problems to news.saix.net, which appear to be related to my 8ta connection IP address.

Usually when I then drop my 8ta connection and reconnect getting an IP address in a different range the problem is temporarily resolved.

Maybe we can assist 8ta by posting IP address ranges with news.saix.net access problems?
This may help with any firewall access issues they may be having.

Well ok then.......
Very simple test.
Note 8ta connection IP - Check news.saix.net connection OK or FAIL.
Drop connection - reconnect - check again.

Results:
41.151.108.206 OK
41.151.84.204 OK
41.151.120.148 OK
41.150.82.78 FAIL
41.150.66.247 FAIL
41.151.69.216 OK
41.150.79.71 FAIL
41.151.74.171 OK
41.150.65.13 FAIL
41.151.85.223 OK
41.150.81.2 FAIL
41.151.85.127 OK
41.150.82.195 FAIL
41.151.113.191 OK
41.151.83.227 OK
41.151.111.128 OK
41.151.82.42 OK
41.150.91.211 FAIL
.
.
.
.
.
and so on.....

Not difficult to see patterns emerging here.
Pretty sure 8ta tech support can check this themselves.
After all they have the full list of IP ranges for all 8ta connections. :D

Lets edit this post (I do it for 8ta), so any semi-educated technician can see it. :)
Results:
41.151.x.x OK
41.150.x.x FAIL
It looks like they fixed one IP range, forgotten other.

.....and easier than that it just does not get :erm:
Do you think they would have spotted it?
:):)

Come on 8ta get this sorted out.
Next week would be good!

Well done, guys. Hope the 8ta peeps can run with this.
