What news servers are out there locally?

news.is.co.za? But for IS accounts only?

What other ones are out there, and do they need login credentials?

news.is.co.za and news.isdsl.net are the IS one's. There is a saix news server but its useless.
 
Is there a usefull International News server (free one, ??)

No login creds needed, but you can only access the IS ns if you have an IS account (authentication is based on IP ranges, I guess?).

For binaries? Doubtful. For other news group resources there are the likes of google groups.

We're not talking about a huge wad of cash for top notch international access though - most are under $10 per month.
