For the last 8 years I have been on a HTC/non-HTC cycle. Every time I get a non HTC phone I am severely disappointed. The non HTC phones I was disappointed with were the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and the One Plus One.

I am coming up for an upgrade mid-December and wish to return to HTC (currently have the OPO). It seems that vodacom are still stocking the HTC One M9, but I feel that this might be a bit outdated to get in December.

Does anyone know if HTC is releasing a new flagship phone soon, and if so what are the chances of vodacom stocking it in quarter 1 2016?

Neither. And the HTC M9 is in no way outdated/there isn't newer tech available on the market yet.

There are rumors of a new HTC device...but if it's also using the Snapdragon 810 then it has nothing to offer over the M9. And the 820 isn't ready yet so it would be using the 810.

Nope. But if I wouldn't have taken the Sony Z3 (I wanted to go back to Sony) that's what I would have taken. Seems like a great phone. Slightly iffy camera (though the best HTC has ever made) and very average battery but other than that great. And when the Snapdragon 810 overheats then everything else does as well because all premium droids have no choice but to go with the Snapdragon 810 (aside from Samsung who simply made their own chip and LG who went with a slightly weaker chip).

I must say I like the idea of a metal body much more than glass although that doesn't make it any more resilient (and increases heat feedback slightly) and if I had one it would end up in a cover just like everything else.

There is just something about HTC phones that makes me miss them when I don't have them. The design, the minimalistic Android skin etc.

I love playing with new things so decided to try an iPhone 6s and so far I am longing for my HTC One m8 back.

Wait for the new flagship. Normally released in Q1.

heh, yeah i will never get a samsung again, they remind me of thissamsung.jpg.

the full metal body is pretty, I had the one M7, when it got scratched up, i sanded and polished it to a mirror-like finish (which got scratched again). I prefer naked phones, even if they get scratched over time.

@IOU, as I understand it, the A9 is a sub-flagship phone, with the M9 still being better.

There is talk of a HTC O2 (that Schumi referred to), leaving the "M" naming convention, but likely not until snapdragon 820.

Snapdragon 617? Don't see how that's a flagship....

Knew you'd have something to comment about that fact ... it's the best they're offering, soon, and the OP was concerned about the M9 being outdated.

Doesn't matter if it's worse than what they're already offering :P
If the older is stronger then the new is irrelevant, just like the Samsung A7 was/is.
