Next iOS version could drop support for iPhone SE

in case you were thinking of keeping your old Iphone going,
Apple makes sure you cant do that.
Lifecycle of an Apple phone - 5 years during which it receives updates.

Lifecycle of an Android phone - 2 years during which it receives updates (after which they stop)

But yeah, Apple are the big bad in this case. Why would they think of supporting a phone for 5 years when they could do what Android does and shorten the OS lifecycle of the phone (being sarcastic here).

I don't understand why this is news? Apple supports devices for 5 years. The SE came out 5 years ago, so support will be dropped next year. iPhone 8 came out 2017 so support will be dropped 2023 etc. It's always been this way...

Edit: Will I get an article in 2026 saying iPhone 12 support has been dropped?

you can use it until you've worn a Hole in the screen,
problem is all the software, and thats where they get you,
Apple being the greedy people they are,

stop support=stop warranty=stop providing updates=stop new threats.

like I said, you can use your "cheap" iphone till the cows come home,
but if Apple decides to stop support, your pretty much screwed.

new features wont come out, new security updates wont be installed,
and new apps might not work, especially on Apple that hates "old" stuff.

and Apple being the dishonest people they are, the last update will slow down the clock speed,
or degrade the Battery somehow, or something else nefarious like that.

not to Say Samsung is any better,
they have to contine making money from you, somehow
Read comments made about Apple's 5 year support vs. Android's 2-year support. All phones have either a 1-year or 2-year hardware warranty anyways. At least with Apple you get an additional 3 years of support.
I suspect you need to readdress your bias here a bit and look at the facts.

point is, a phone without (security) updates is vulnerable,
if it stops receiving official updates, its a good sign to get another phone and throw the old one away.
(unless you heavily buck the disposable phone trend and root and get unofficial monthly updates)

and apples business model is exactly that, get another phone, whatever happens.
fine if your on Contract, and you dont care, but for those buying cash?

not such a nice thought, forced to buy another phone whenever Apple wants more money out of you.
sure you could keep it in a drawer, but using it everyday is a bit of a gamble,

yes Samsung is copying Apple now, but they been doing that for a while now.
You should try this...

Why do you keep posting if you're not even going to read the replies?
Stuck on Android and probably one of those guys who bashes Apple. I mean, a 5-year OS support policy is REALLY bad when Android only offers 2. #criesinhypocrisy

Genuine question since I do not know, Apple tends to drop support for new OS updates after 5-6 years, how long does the likes of Samsung/Sony etc. keep support by comparison?
2...but the guy can't do maths. Or see the benefit Apple provides to their users to extend the lifespan of their devices to 5 years if they can.

Yeah, while the only point I agree with him on is the trend of disposable devices in a short amount of time needs to come to an end, Apple at least holds the support bar high for those that want longevity officially, and with more Android OEMs locking down their devices, that argument of boot unlocking to sustain it on one's own accord might be a thing of the past sadly.

Just on the Security updates

Apple security updates - Apple Support

So even if you are out of the new iOS version, you still get security updates. iPad mini 2 was released 2013 and still received security updates. We just won't get new iOS versions for these devices

Got an iPhone 6 from 2014 (replaced my Xperia Z1). It's still as fast as it was and we let the kids use it to chat with family & friends. No issues with the phone. I'll probably extend the life of my Xr to 4 years, maybe 5 (got it September 2019) and pay less on my contract.

Huawei mate 10 pro: release date November 2017. Last and final official update July 2020.

iPad pro 10.5: release date July 2017. Latest official update, still ongoing. Hopefully iOS 15 too.

My current devices.

Doubt it. Apart from custom roms heck Whatsapp still support Jellybean that came out in 2012.
My S6 and Note 4 are unusable, slow beyond measure. Loaded custom from on note 4, still k@k

Friend's iphone 6 still works like a charm

again, a phone can go on forever, only limitation is the software/Hardware on it,
we've all been preconditioned to accept the fact, that the lifespan of a phone is 2 years, no ifs or maybes.

here maybe an analogy that might work
look back in History, at the Phoebus cartel, of a lightbulb being designed to break after X amount of hours.

yes, you can keep your old Iphone as long as you like in a sock drawer,
same too with Android, and you are forced to buy another just to be able to run the latest apps.

my point being, if you want a phone to last, you are forced to root, or find unique phones that dont subscribe to this cartel,
again, if your buy under contract, what do you care? just get another and throw the old one away.

but those they buy cash? you are forced to endure the slowdowns, and the battery limitations and lack of support.
that are all completely artificial, and designed to make you buy another, when its not necessary.

laugh all you like, I know what I want, and thats longevity and monthly updates.
crazy? maybe, but people who questioned the cartel often are.
