Its really up to you.
If you dont mind sharing your network with people who connect, then you can leave it as it is.
But if you would rather have them on a seperate subnet (also makes it easier to setup firewalls), then it would be best to have it setup as a router.

We try to encourage JaWug members to get a seperate wireless router especially for linking to other JaWug members. This is why we made up the JawugKit, to make it easier to take this route.
In the end, its up to you and your budget I suppose :)

Hopefully i will be connected sometime this week to TheRodent, that is if we can push through all the trees and get the right direction to point the grid ;) If we can connect I will be buying the kit very shortly.

This is dumb - I know - but I will just put it out there anyways...

<MyDumbQuestions.co.za>
Why aren't lasers used (apart from price) for point A to point B comms?

I haven't got a clue about all these microwave links, but surely the concept is similar to a maser? OR is it exactly a maser with comms stuff bolted-in?

More votes?
There have got to be more than 12 people out there interested in joining.
There are over 150 on NodeDB.

I've been interested for a while and still am very interested.
Just don't have the cash right now - was almost there, but then my car went in for R1500 of repairs.

Hopefully within the next two months I'll be sorted ! :)

Laserz tend to not like rain, bad weather, obstructions and such. Wifi is a bit more forgiving. Plus, you cannot beat the pricetag regardless of whether it matters or not.

Yes, I know this is sooo off topic, but you should be used to me by now...

Sure :), but I was specifically thinking about these microwave links that the various service providers use betixt towers & what not- why microwave which is essentially a different frequency radiation stream... I suppose weather conditions would play havoc with a laser linkup. Does anyone know what equipment gets used for the microwave linkups - is it a maser type device?

Just as a matter of interest. The only way I could register my node was to register as if I was providing an internet service. And thats the only place I can log in. I thought there was something wrong with my computer at home, but same thing at the office.

So...I have not been able to register my position....def. something wrong with the site.

Wifi equipment qualifies as "Microwave" ;) The 2.4Ghz frequency is very close to what your stock standard microwave oven uses, in fact. The 5.8ghz frequency is also classified as microwave. Most commercial microwave links use some kind of electronic equipment along the principles of Wifi gear.

Northcliff

Hey ... I vote for Northcliff. Wasn't Northcliff one of the more populated towers of the old Megawan?

May, I suggest that if you are looking at acquiring KIT, you get a Linksys WRT54G. This is what JAWUG is going to be standardizing on. They're cheap, reliable and heavily moddable.

Good price ??

Yup the Linksys WRT54G is the baby i am looking to invest in but to find it at a good price is difficult I have have quotes from R950 up to R1800-00 :( at those prices i might as well get the Jawug Kit. But as i have most of the things to set up i just need the WRT54g and then i can set up. :)

Hmm I suggest speaking to Daffy or TheRoDent.
As far as I know you can pick it up for quite a bit cheaper than that.
