Nikon D3000 bundle

Going from P&S to this is amazing. We probably won't be taking photos professionally, but the improvement in image quality and in the types of photos which we can take, is brilliant.

Wouldn't mind having a 300mm zoom :)

LOL, it has already begun. I was also the same in the beginning. The kit will be enough. Now thousands of rands later it's still not enough.

I am pulling the trigger on a 5D MKII this week hopefully. :D

The difference in IQ is going to be staggering. There are those that might claim otherwise but even the worst of todays dSLRs is going to yield a better image that even the best of the advanced P&Ss

Nice - what are you upgrading from? I thought long and hard about the 5DMk2 but it wasnt to be.

Cool! Btw where did you read that 1000D and 450D IQ is better?

I read various reviews (such as http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond3000/) which note that the Canon's IQ is slightly better. One of the differences being that the D3000 has a CCD sensor whilst the Canon has a CMOS sensor, each of which has some advantages and disadvantages.

I doubt that the difference is going to bother us too much for everyday usage
:o

Remember that the IQ is largely relevant to the JPEG processing. If you take a picture with that entry level Nikon D3000 and take that very same picture with the new Canon 1DmkIV, and send the two RAW files to bwana, I'm sure he can make them look exactly the same ;)

Anyway, you're not going to be comparing each shot you take with the same shot from another camera.

I am upgrading from my 450D

The thought process was also very long for me. My two choices was between the 7D and the 5DMKII.

At the end of the day the 5D won. Reason behind it is that my type of shooting will involve more Landscape and Portraits and of course Full Frame.

I am also just going to get the body and not with the 24-105 but rather the 17-40 for the more wide angle. With that I will use my 50mm 1.4 and a 70-200 F4 (Getting it without IS on recommendation from you and some research) I can rather spend the cash that I save to get a nice flash and a better tripod.

Nice selection there - especially if you're in to landscapes, in which case that tripod will definitely come in handy. 17mm is way too wide for me, which is why I'm selling my 16-35, but that 50mm on a full frame will be useful.

We'd better stop dragging this nikon thread off topic . . . :D

Just a question, is there a huge difference in quality between the D80 and the D3000?

My camera was shrugged off as crap by someone with the D80, although he knows zip about the D3000 and generally is a know it all.

BTW - I am loving the D3000, really is just an amazing little piece of machinery. :)

The D3000 replaces the D40, which is the entry level body. I think the D80 is the older version of the D90, which is a higher spec model, but from what I can see the D3000 and D80 have pretty similar specs, except for a few things. The D80 has a bigger viewfinder, and most likely has more buttons for direct access to things.

But the photos should look about the same :)

Yeah I noticed the bigger view finder and the lcd on the top of the cam, also a bigger body. All round a very nice camera.

I know overall it is higher spec than the D3000, just didn't take kindly to it being compared to his old cannon from 8 years ago. lol. :D
