Nikon D5000 kit, any good?

It's got nothing to do with personal bias, or brand loyalty. It's got to do with functionality, features, lenses... The Nikon D5000 is the same system as is in the D90 and D300. I have a D90, if you would like ask me any questions.

I suppose kit lenses are better than nothing but I've yet to come across a manufacturer that puts top notch glass on their cheapest cameras. I suppose adequate is the word that usually springs to mind.

both lenses mentioned are great (18-55 & 55-200VR)
they're not adequate, they're great lenses
price, weight, performance, everything :)

Iirc you used to say the same about the canon kit lens. :)

Once you go down the dslr road you basically invest in glass and you should buy the best you can get/afford, the body is a minor issue compared to the glass. Once you have decided on a system you are kinda bound to it due this investment you have made.

My logic tells me kit lenses, which are relatively cheap, cannot really be great lenses but will do the job. Another thing that appeals to me is how things feel in your hand and having held a couple of cameras I must say some things feel plasticy for lack of a better word.

I think I will just sleep on this one for however long it takes me :D

your logic is outdated - this is a mindset from the olden days
you're in for a pleasant surprise :D

I went and read a review or two on the 55-200 VR lens and it does not leave me with a warm fuzzy feeling to be honest.

You don't have to feel fuzzy. You just have to check if the lens is. :D

I've used them both a couple of times.
