No Dial Tone Error in PE

Has anyone been getting "No Dial Tone" error when dialing in some areas of PE. I have a client who phoned me this morning. Apparently he has been getting this error since last week - Telkom have now told him it is his modem(he thinks otherwise). Now PC-support is not usually my main focus but he is a friend so I though oh well no problem I will just take my laptop along, plug it in and test his line. So before leaving the office I set up a dial up connection on the laptop to test this, and what do you know, same error!

Now my laptop is 3 months old and I have used the modem several times without hassles. So I crawled to the back of my desktop and plugged in my trusty 56k and guess what SAME ERROR. I could not believe it so I plugged in the phone directly into the output of the modem and I can hear a dial tone.

what the hell is going on here? I am going to the clients premises at 12 and I expect to see the same result there. Please tell me if there is anyone else experiancing similar problems, if you are PM your land line number so we present a united front to telkom and get something done. My cllient has been on the phone to telkom for the last week without success.

My guess is that the voltages on there lines have fallen to below specifcation in certain areas , so the modem percieves there being no dial tone. Incidently I can send faxes on this line still.

Try disable dial tone detection (ie blind dialling).

yea, had the same problem back in the day with the telkom call answer service messing about with the dial tone. disabling dial tone detection sorted out my issues.

tried that allready, no luck. it stops the error message from coming up, but the modem still does not even try to dial out. it just freezes on dialing.

anyway I have just recieved a list of prices from 3g.co.za and I am going to reccommend that he goes GPRS, this is suitable as he only uses internet for a couple emails every day.
