No iPhone for SA

MS is going to rule the world cause nobs like Apple keep cocking up their oppertunities where MS see a niche at coin it. I mean come on, who releases "the next best thing" in the cell phone industry then cripple it with 3 year old moronic concepts.
Apple has sold how many first gen phones? 1-1.5 million in the US alone? Seems like a real cock up to me. I'm sure its going to be a disaster for them in Europe tomorrow.

But hey, Microsoft sure conquered the world with that brown Zune though didnt they - or isnt that the niche you were thinking about?

I love the whole camera phone argument because 2mp or 5mp - it doesnt matter . . . camera phones are awful ;)

Have you ever used anything Apple ?

If not pls don't run it down. I have had various Apple items and damn those things are amazing. I wouldn't mind having an Iphone. Thruth is.. looks like it won't happen

It's not their products I have a problem with, it's how locked down and closed all their systems are. It's the Apple way or the highway. Everything about apple is like dogma.

I'll take freedom to choose and change anyday thanks.

Yes, yes... they are super amazing. Tell me... you got one? didnt think so. So whats the point. I dont live in the US or Europe, and so is of no relevance to me. I live in SA where you cant buy them.

As for the Zune, brilliant product.. bad timing. It flogs the iPod six love. And might I add had wireless long before the iPod, integrates with multiple devices, has an open API, supports thrid party software, blah, blah.

Put it this way, I own a 30GB iPod Video. As we speak I am listening to System of a Down on my HTC, cause it syncs with my Pc, XBOX and I am pretty sure I can get it to sync with my toaster if I tried. My iPod I use as a flash drive, cause it (and iTunes) does a piss poor job of everything else.

N95's camera is on another level don't compare it to your previous thoughts on camera phones.

ebudae very true!

F*cking ITunes how I hate that product.I wont make the mistake of buying another Ipod.

Gotta agree with the Slapster on this one bwana - they may have sold battleships full of them and they will make a killing (already have) but they will not penetrate the market to the degree that companies like MS / HTC etc. will and have already.

You already see corporates rejecting the iPhone because of its gimped feature set, even NASA have publicly stated that its not suitable in a business sense (I mean rocket scientists fer chrissake!).
Most people will agree that multitouch and visual voicemail aside iPhone is a few years behind in terms of 'real' features things like cut and paste for instance are available in ancient smartphones/pdas, you can't even MMS from iPhone.

Fun and shiny aside the iPhone is severely lacking in some critical areas, multi touch and visual voicemail ...even a stunning interface lose their appeal when the basics aren't there.

I'll still say that I'd like to import one once I feel that the current hacks etc. available are reliable because I cant see a single thing wrong with the device that cant be fixed in firmware/software and probably will be. The notable exception being 3G / HSDPA - its scandalous that Apple has sacrificed this on behalf of their customers just so that they could hop into bed with AT&T ...a company whose networks Apple was founded by hacking with their 'blue boxes'.
Its things like that which make me see red with Apple and the reason why I am quite anti in many ways and the main reason that I will not buy into their spiel. At the same time - I will not cut my nose off to spite my face, iPhone is a great device and will probably get even better over the next few months.

Its still a camera phone and suffers from the same limitations that all camera phones suffer from. Its a form factor issue and there's not much any camera phone can do to overcome it and still retain a slim design.

Of course I dont have one - I'm an unashamed crackberry addict. :o If blackberry fell off the face of the earth then I'd certainly get one tomorrow. :)

For all it's openness whats the support like on non-windows platforms? Maybe its worth taking another look at it.

Yay every hates the iPhone!!! Cool.

Minus the lil american, lets just leave him in his lil box!!:D

Vodacom and MTN are just waiting for the dollar to drop a bit more before they sign the "exclusive" deal with Apple. :D

With full use, I'm talking 2 hours of music, 1-2 hours of video a day, alot of internet use over wifi mainly, and some over edge, 30+ sms's and a half hour of calls or so, my phone still hasn't given me the 20% low battery warning at night. I take it out of the charger at 6am, and put it back in at 12am. None of my WM6 phones were upto a day like that, without plugging into my computer for some USB charging in the middle of the day...especially not with Wifi always on. I'm quite impressed with battery life so far, especially considering the amount I have been using it on Wifi.

Now, I have had 2 HTC phones, an iMate and I've currently got a samsung i600 in my cupboard. While the iPhone is not the pinacle of phones, it's still pretty good. It falls short on not having a proper keyboard, and as good as the touchscreen keyboard is - it's not as good as the ones on either of my WM6 phones.

One thing that sets the iPhone apart, is the internet browser. I've tried many times to surf the web on my HTC's. Even simple sites like cartoday were a hassle - never mind the more complex sites. With the iPhone, late at night I don't even bother to fire up my laptop for my before bed surfing...I just do it from the iPhone. It's a pleasure. The touch screen is wonderfull too, so easy to use and so purposefull. I like the fact there is no stylus to use, and I can push all the buttons with my stocky fingers. This is the first touch phone I can use with 1 hand if needs be, which is a must for me (and the reason I've hated so many other touch phones).

Another bonus, is my day often has gaps in it. Normally, my ipod is in the car - or I left it at home. I can't carry an iPod and a phone as I run short on pocket space. I know the WM6 devices can play music...but with the iPhone I just pull it out - and I have my music library with me. Even watching heroes is a pleasure on the screen. It seems so clear and is a great size.

The iPhone is not the ultimate business tool - but boy do I love mine.

No iPhone in SA, "BooHooo" (childish but it's so appropriate) Apple loves shooting itself in the foot and charging ridiculous prices. So what's new?

I'm not sure what all the fuss is about. It's not as if we cannot actually get iPhones - they are available in other countries, not on other planets. They're cool enough to make the effort to get hold of. It's just that Apple's stupid distributor won't import them and support them. For something the size of an iPhone, it's only marginally more inconvenient to buy it somewhere else in the world and bring/send it here. Unlocking seems to be pretty straightforward (about 20% of all iPhones sold are cracked, I believe). Just don't break it.

You can even buy them online in South Africa (R5000)...

Shooting itself in the foot? They just had one of their most successful quarters to date. As for their prices I find them pretty reasonable - I sure get my money's worth.

I would stay away from Apple products like this. It reminds me way too much of the scummy way Telkom does business.
