No Man's Sky

I love open world games, but a game THIS open makes me feel that a lot of people may Just eek out their money's worth before moving on. Hardcore explorers will probably keep it going for a while, then I think even they may get tired of naming a creature that just has longer ears than the 30 planets before.

The concept is great and the procedural nature will hopefully be adopted into "smaller" games, but this one is not for me.

You are not, which is the point. Even the world's gamers as a collective will not be able to visit all of them in my lifetime. You might argue that this makes them redundant and pointless. But I dunno, I kind of find the thought that I could find and name an animal on a planet, and nobody will ever come across it. Or someone might find the same planet in 5 years time (If the game is still going) and be like, oh **** this is the first planet I have ever landed on that someone else named.

It is almost a weird time capsule kind of feeling I suppose. Pitching up and knowing that someone else was there first. Wondering if they are still there, on the other side of the planet, or if they have long since moved on.

Heck, If you are clever about it, you could probably create your own easter eggs and riddles, in the names that you give things.

It will probably get boring and repetitive as most large scale games do, especially procedurally generated ones, as you say. But I can still appreciate the scope of what they are trying to do here.

MMmmyeah, good points, but I don't think it's nearly enough.
The problem I see with the randomly generated content as it is now that it's going to feel very thin very fast. You're going to linearly travel in a direction, go wow at the randomly generated creatures and environments for the first 20 planets, but then they're all going to start looking/acting pretty much the same as all the creatures on the previous worlds.

I'd much rather that they have people traveling out from central hubs, like in the Gateway books. You choose a location somewhere in the universe and get shot there. Once there you take over, land, mine, farm, hunt, fight etc (whether by yourself or in a group setting). You come back and build up locally (whether on cash, points, exploration stars, resources collected or whatever else). Use scripting to create community planets/missions or even just to drive animal behaviour.

But yeah, talk is cheap hehe, we'll have to wait until we can play it ourselves.

It's an interesting game, but open world games don't usually hold my attention for long, so I can't see myself getting this. Sandbox can get boring sometimes.

Look impressive at first, nice PG technology in play and well running engine.

However I think that is about it. How much can the content differ from PG planet to planet? Probably not too much and eventually its going to be more of the same.

Only a single player experience is another big limiting factor, albeit nice for some, doesnt appeal to me. This games appeal wont last long, and once people put about 5-10 hours into it, that will probably be it.

Being able to explore previously unexplored planets and find new creatures etc, possibly name them, will last only a short time before it becomes boring. ED sold a similar concept.. wow how boring that became.

Looks like the game has been delayed...

The ambitious space game No Man’s Sky has been delayed, two sources tell Kotaku. We don’t know exactly what the new release date is—and it may not be finalized yet—but we’re hearing it’s been bumped until at least July or August.

Developed by a small UK-based team called Hello Games, No Man’s Sky has been much hyped since it was revealed back in 2013, seeing extensive coverage everywhere from the Stephen Colbert show to The New Yorker. Last October, the developers announced that it’d be out in June of 2016, but that appears to have changed.

A reliable Kotaku source was the first to inform us of the delay. A second source, who works at GameStop, said they received marketing materials today for No Man’s Sky with the original June 21 release date. However, stores were informed that the release date is no longer correct and that they should cover it up with a “Coming Soon” label:

Rather delay and delay than release a pile of turd.

Publishers and their damn release dates have been F****** up the gaming industry for years. Some of the biggest AAA titles take 6 years to dev, you just only hear about it 2 years prior to release, thus making it seem as if it was done quickly.

If you want a decent game, wait for it, let the devs delay it.. if you want a **** game, push for release and implement release dates.

Rather release a game when it's ready than push schite to the market as the reviewers&consumer will sink you.

Can't wait to play this. This game will be perfect when you want a chilled game.

As much as I was looking forward to playing this next month, I also will take a delay over an unfinished game any day.

So which one of you sent death threats to the developers?

Maybe they started playing it and realized it is not so much fun and delayed it because of that... it has happened to other games before.

I still do not get this game, think it will get boring after the first hour, but maybe that's just me.

its very difficult to explain, Hello Games has been very cagey with everything that you can and cant do in the game and maybe you cant do much. but I am looking at it as what they have shown the in trailers as an exploration/survival game to be able to see for the first time planets, creatures and ships that no one has or may never see for the life of the game. yes there is an end goal of reaching the center of the universe but the way Sean Murray has explained it, it seems to be more about the journey than the end goal.

The game is definitely not going to be for everyone. Hello Games has not really explained in detail what you can and cant do in the game and i think its been hyped so much because of it. if you didn't like what you saw in the trailers then hold off on getting it and maybe wait until its come out and there is more info on it.
