No Man's Sky

"Take off and nuke it from orbit...."

I've not played for like 2 years, will I need to restart or should I just be able to hop back in?

What have you got to lose? Just give it a go and see how it feels. I usually start the expedition as a new save anyway so that could get you back into it and if you feel like it's too much then you could start a normal save and go through the tutorial stuff again. The expedition is only running for 2 weeks this time instead of the more usual 6 weeks.

You could potentially use that old save and start the expedition from the anomaly, there is a new station to do that. Just near the Quicksilver merchant if you remember where that is.

Ah crap, better get going than :-)

It's a fun one but that first planet is a bit crazy with a very short day/night cycle and the stars spinning by, made me a bit dizzy! I finished phase one of the expedition last night, am definitely not a speed runner!

Finished phase 1 as well, but parts of all the other phases as well. Actually don't blame you for saying you're not a speed runner, it's actually quite tough to get a start, especially with no base or freighter to dump gear into. Especially since I encountered 2 derelict freighters, I was chock a block of stuff :(
The other bugger up, I didn't realise that they'd given me completed modules for the advanced laser, teleporter and scanners :-(
Though I'm sitting on a good amount of units, nanites and gear now, I'm through the portal, claimed a floating island, but realised I have no foundation blueprints or any way of powering things as yet :-( so it's literally just a base computer floating on an island :).
Need to get more blueprints or get storm crystals.

Was wondering if you started! It certainly sounds like you managed to pick everything back up after a 2 year break. I got to the end of Phase 2 last night but it's a shorter one. I tried starting the expedition from my main save so then I could get a copy of my ship and multi-tool (purchased with nanites) via the Anomaly. They sort of blocked warping for this expedition but my other ship has a warp drive so then I was off to make money and nanites and am now getting all my upgrades sorted.

Getting a bit sick of topping up that purple bar though and it was misbehaving (I think) in that it was dropping but was showing as 100% in my exosuit so I couldn't top up. Will see what it does this evening when I play, maybe they intend that to happen.

Having my ship with 100 storage slots means I'm not too worried about space but I think I will build a storage container. I did get blueprint at some stage but if you have the anomaly then you can always buy them there. I often find myself buying things and then they give them to me later.

You'll need some storm crystals for one of the tasks but also keep a few to make something later. I have to track down a worm planet to do the hungering tendrils, not my favourite but at least have an A class rifle now with lots of weapon upgrades. Might be tempted to upgrade it or find an S class.

ooooh what did you think of the changes since you last played? I really like look and layout of the new space stations!

That freaking threw me for a six at first :-), cause I came into land and was like wtf is this, went back to my main save and it's the same. Actually makes a lot more sense than the old layout, also the graphical improvements even on the Xbox Series X looks really good and performance on my Rog Ally is also much better, as I continued playing in bed :-).
I got the eyes from a freighter so don't need to go looking for those horrors, storm crystals as well but sadly it doesn't complete the task for that but it did for the Eye one.
I did send some stuff across but I don't see it anywhere, I didn't know what to actually send and kicked myself, cause if I had known I would've sent chromatic metal, that took me ages to find, also took me ages to remember how to get it :-). A lot of my playtime was refreshing on how to play the game, like what makes what and where and how to get it. Like the bugger up of the completed modules being given to me. Plus no warp ship cause I didn't know if I could send a ship as I didn't see that option. I did send a lot of goods that helped on startup but it wasn't enough :-(

Yeah have had a bug where I made the quick silver elixir, consumed it and no portal appeared, so had to make another one :-(. Also I have gotten things like freighter storage expansions which I'm not really sure I'd need? Can you get a freighter? I'm also wondering if base building is really something needed to do now that I look at it.

You should be able to get your ship from the main save. Go to the terminal in the Anomaly, to the left of the Quicksilver vendor. You have the option there to collect your stuff but also to make a copy of your ship and multi tool. Ship is a couple of thousand nanites I think but once I had my warp drive I was off to make money through trading and then jumped to pirate systems to buy suspicious packets and I sell the upgrades for nanites. I got my initial nanites through scanning and if you can find all creatures on a planet, the nanite reward is good.

Nice that you could switch from xbox to Ally! With the storm crystals it's the collecting that completes the task but I didn't struggle to find an extreme weather planet. I use the wiki a lot for stuff I don't remember and it said extreme weather planets often have the activated metals (activated copper, indium, cadmium etc). Also you can often buy chromatic metal and I have stocked up a bit when I find it. Also discovered you can make it from cadmium, indium, emeril and the activated versions too. I got the backpack refiner as soon as I could, or maybe they gave me the plans. They usually at least give you the ability to have the portable refiner.

I need to do a derelict freighter as I saw we need to collect tainted metal, or maybe can buy from the scrap dealer at a station.

I suspect because you can't warp that you'd have to save up and buy a freighter if you wanted one. If you get a copy of your main save ship then you'll get the "save the freighter from the pirates" event every now and then when you enter a system so could probably pick up a freighter that way. I made a simple base but more for extra storage.

If you played previous expeditions and have ship rewards from them then you could probably collect one of those ships from the Quicksilver vendor, think around 1400 nanites.

I don't think I can send the ship there now? As I've already started the expedition. Ah crap I converted the tainted metal to nanites :-( cause I was running out of space. I do have a portable refiner as I don't have a backpack one. Yup I made chromatic metal from cadium, I landed right next to a nice vein of it and got about 1000 units of it :-)

Nope no other expeditions :-( just this one sadly. As I didn't play for a long time before this

You don't have to send the ship, if you started the expedition from your main save then it should be available to be copied. It will be whichever ship you were using last in that save (I think). I had 2 multi-tools and it only offered me a copy of the one I was using at the time.

I don't know if you needed to keep the tainted metal, I think maybe only collect it for the reward? Might be able to buy it from the scrap merchant at the space station, can't quite remember if he sells it or just trades you goods for it.

Adding the backpack refiner is one of my favourites, no more forgetting my portable refiner on random planets

well if you finish this one then you will get a new ship that you can use in future expeditions/games. They may also re-release this year's expeditions again at the end of the year. Previously we got about a week to complete each one, so you could jump into them if you wanted and have the time.
