I use Garageband a lot for recording and I noticed that my new Macbook doesn't have the mic input.

I have been using my old Macbook in the meantime, but I am planning on selling it soon so was wondering what options I have? How else can you connect a mic, or instruments to the mac

There is a built-in microphone. The headphone jack is actually a combined headphone/line in so you can plug a mic in there. Other options are a USB microphone or a USB/Firewire audio interface.

Thanks Syn, built in mic won't help. Need to be able to plug in guitar, drums, bass etc.

But you say the audio slot is a line in as well, so I should just be able to plug them into their then?

I will try this later.

I have a Griffin iMic but I do believe many other USB sound cards will work just as well.
...or...
System Prefs -> Sound -> Input:
Use audio port for: <SELECT>
if you only need input

Awesome, thanks for the info.

Luckilly I see the new 2011 "PRO" models have dedicated audio in and out ;)

Sorry, misread you have a macbook...

Time to write that hit and upgrade ;)
