Acting Eskom chairman Mpho Makwana said on Wednesday that the parastatal would no longer need government bailouts.

His comments follow the release of Eskom's 2009/10 preliminary financial results, which showed the power utility made a net profit of R3.6 billion.

"We will now be less of a burden on the fiscus because now we're going back to being the 'Jewel in the Crown', and won't need any more money from the fiscus," said Makwana.

Eskom, which generates 95 percent of the country's electricity, has to date received several multi-billion rand bailouts from government to keep the lights on.

The parastatal's image as a reliable power provider was tarnished in 2008 when there were massive blackouts.

"Significant work has gone into rebuilding Eskom's image. We are on a strong road to recovery," said Makwana.

"We are in better alignment in terms of policy, meaning that we can focus on the role of Eskom moving forward," he added. - I-Net Bridge

OK, so does this mean the increases for the next two years are not needed then?

Of course we'll still have to bend over and prepare to receive boarders, bud. It's the ANC way. We'll be raped by every Parastatal and government organization because it's so easy for them to carry on doing so.

You should never have needed bailouts in the first place you pillaging nincompoop.

Eskom should never have needed bailouts in the first place you nincompoop. Jewel of the crown indeed .. you're sucking the life out of every South African so some multinational companies can make a bigger profit.
Methinks of some other 'crown jewels' when thinking of Eskom and believe me they reside nowhere near one's head.
