No Service issue

Called Vodacom, and they told me there is nothing wrong on there side, Turned Auto3G off and still "no service"

Reboot to regain some signal, and see how the performance is with Auto3G off for a few days.

I've had a feeling Auto3G is either buggy or not playing with our carriers nicely :p

Disabled mine until i find a more stable/working version if it is indeed the program. Could be our towers too

Vodacom will never admit that anything is wrong on their side. There could be a glitch on that specific tower and the poor old call centre oke will have no idea...

You could try restoring the firmware back to the previous version, and then using that until the new 4.2 software comes out in a few weeks time, then upgrade again...I have no problems with my 3GS - on MTN. Possibly buy a 99c MTN SIM and see if it still happens (to see if it is network related)

Guys, if you restart the phone and it is still showing "no service" I would recommend a full restore. And not restoring from back-up, but setting up as a new phone.

Update from my side - I don't have Auto3G installed - my phone is currently not even jailbroken. But, as mentioned earlier I decided to switch off 3G.
Has only been a very hours, but seems to make a massive difference in terms of signal strength.

With 3G on, most of the time I have 1-2 bars. Now with Edge/GPRS only I have 4-5 bars. Will update to let you know if I experience the "no service" issue again.

I also get much better signals with 3G turned off - it all depends on the area you are in, and how well the area is covered by 3G. Suggest you leave 3G off, and only turn it on when you need to use your phone for data - as there is far better penetration on Edge and GPRS frequency bands across the country (sadly) - and that is a network problem and not a phone problem

sigh, alright then let me try restore then.

Resetted but nothing changed, so still no luck, sigh is this only me that still have this problem?

I would say try your SIM card in another phone to try and isolate the problem.. But I doubt you have any other micro-sim phones lying around

You could always back up, restore the phone, and test signal BEFORE restoring from your back up. That would rule out the possibility of it being a setting/firmware issue.

If it's still not working after that, it could be anything from a dodgy SIM, network/tower problem, to a hardware problem.

I know i'm kind stating the obvious here, but good luck nevertheless

busy restoring, tell me how do i get my paid apps back? do i need to repay for them again?

No. They should sync to your phone from your iTunes library.

If not, when you go to press "buy" it will tell you you have already purchased the app and it will download again free of charge

Slightly off topic, but yes, 3G signal is not as good as 2G signal in SA. Why? Because 3G here mainly uses 2100MHz (doesn't reach as far as 2G). I countries like Aus they use a mixture of 2100MHz and 850/900MHz (which reaches a lot further) for 3G - thus 3G reception is way better.

Maybe, now that Cell-C is dwelling in the 900MHz range for 3G, Vodacom and MTN will catch a wakeup too ;)

Restored my iPhone to origenal settings etc.. And now trying to connect to iTunes, now it tells me "there is no SIM card installed in the iPhone you are attempting to activate" i removed the sim cleaned it etc.. still no luck

But the fact that when it loses signal it does not keep searching for it and instead says "no service" until a restart makes me think its a phone (whether software or hardware) issue?

Push mail seems to work fine on Edge/GPRS, so if it prevents the phone from having "no service" issues I would happily stick with these settings and only turn 3G on when I want to browse/facebook/etc

Hmm... Take it into a Vodashop perhaps and get them to look at your MicroSIM and test it. Or if you can get hold of another micro-sim, try another SIM in there.

So it could be the SIM or a hardware issue.
