Petrol price rises again

The retail price of all grades of petrol will rise by 45 cents a litre on Wednesday next week, the minerals and energy department said on Friday.

The wholesale price of diesel with a 0.05 percent sulphur content will decrease by 38 cents a litre.

Diesel with a 0.005 percent sulphur content will also decrease by 38 cents a litre.

The wholesale price of illuminating paraffin will decrease by 26 cents a litre and the single maximum national retail price for illuminating paraffin will decrease by 34 cents a litre.

Seriously though, I know very little about this, why is it going up?
 
They explained on the radio why diesel is going down but petrol up by so much but I did not catch it...

+1:D. Although with the increases last year, diesel users were really being screwed over so I think this decrease is only fair. Some of last year's increases were almost double those of the petrol hikes... but we're still being screwed over no matter what you use

Manuel hikes fuel levy - twice
Having only recently felt the benefits of a lower crude oil price in their pockets, by virtue of lower fuel prices at the pumps, consumers must brace themselves for a general levy increase of 23c a litre on petrol and 24c a litre on diesel on April 1. On top of that, the Road Accident Fund (RAF) levy would also rise by 17,5 cents a litre of fuel.

There was a double whammy in the budget for motorists, who have only recently started to feel the benefits of the markedly lower crude oil price.

The fuel levy on petrol will increase by 23c to R1.50/l and by 24c to R1.35/l for diesel on April 1 this year. But on the same date the Road Accident Fund levy on petrol and diesel increases by 17.5c to 64c/l.

Did they implement the new levies earlier?
As if not then expect a further 40.7c/l increase as of the 1st of April 2009.:o

I have been an avid critic of Manuel for a number of years now as come Budget time he always increases the Fuel Levy. In past years it has been 10 or 15 cents, this year he went the whole hog at 24 cents plus the 17.5 cents for the RAF.
He spotted the gap in the lower oil price and took it as he knows there is going to be a downfall in revenue collection the coming financial year due to the economic slowdown.
One could view his move as a stroke of genius keeping the coffers flush, but can we really be on the same side as Trevor as just look how Government wastes money as when a Department gets a budget they cannot spend it properly and similarly now that things are tougher we are supporting other African countries in the way of Zimbabwe, DRC and who knows who else. Our hard earned money is not all being spent within South Africa and one always hears of the wastage and corruption in Government circles, so myself and probably many people are simply gatvol of paying for what? For every taxpayer there are 3 people on Welfare Grants.

A Revenue Collection Service that runs so efficiently putting all other Departments to shame. Everything is so hunky dory, online and assessments are down in a matter of a couple of days. Hooray I am happy at least some Government Department runs properly, but does it not make you think that is all this Government wants us for, to just raise taxes for them.
