No word on local Google servers

I just don't get this one as it seems that they are missing out on a significant market.

local youtube servers would be nice

Could you imagine the cost of hosting that locally? Who knows how many decades it will take before SA comes in line with international hosting prices.

I sort of fail to see their presense here in any case, but I suspect it might be due to my ignorance more than anything else. Apart from planning to do things, what exactly are they doing in South Africa?

Local youtube would be great, don't see that happening, that database must be huuuuuuuge.

They wouldn't need to cache the whole database, just the current "in use" vids. Just like a normal cache server. One guy watches an obscure vid, and then it becomes cached for a week locally.

Looks to me like they only want to exploit our wallets.
Do they actually do anything else other than ensuring that their ad servers which serve local content work and handing out free Google T-shirts?

Exactly

When we were installing our server at IS in Cape Town, there was a large fenced off area in the one room that according to tech guy was a Google area. There was space for a lot of racks but they only had 2 with about 4 servers.

We also heard that Google booked some space at IS in Cape Town. Google also sponsored the Cape Town Internet Exchange - some indication that they may do something there.

A local Ad Server maybe?

Mauritius is a tax haven, maybe that has something to do with it.

Also, maybe Google recons that a local cache server would make more sense in more bandwidth starved areas? (IE SA is not bandwidth starved enough)

I think once Google see the costs involved they'll run far away...
Or maybe they'll get involved and compete with the sad ISP's and hosting providers we have...

Local ad server would make sense with them pushing Adwords on us so much lately. Local analytics (atleast for the tracking code) would make my day.
