Hi

Does Iburst allow inter-node connections? And if so how do they calculate the bandwidth usage?

Q

Do you mean a point to point connection on the iBurst Wireless service? That would be charged at the same rate as any other bandwidth on their network.

If you are looking for a dedicated link between two locations then you could look at Metro-Ethernet that they also provide. You can PM me if you want details on their Metro-E service.

I think he means two iburst modems talking directly to each other.

Answer is no, all modems talk to the base station, and the base stations talks back to the modems.

Even if you have two iburst modems sitting in the same room, your communications go to the tower, and back to your other modem in the room. And that is seen as bandwidth.

iburst have no local bandwidth concept, if you send 1mb to someone on the same tower, or 1mb to someone in the USA, 1mb is deducted from your cap.

Hi

What I meant is lets say you have site A and site B, both with a Iburst connection, will it be possible to run a VPN link between site A and B? It's for non-commercial use. So lets say both site's have a 1Gb account, if the 1 Gb is up will it fall back on to the throttled speed?

Ambo, can you maybe send me more details of the Metro-Ethernet service?

Yes you can use a VPN between site A and site B but it will use up cap at both ends. So if you have a 1GB cap and you want to transfer a 1GB file then both sites will have used up their cap once you have finished transferring the file.

I've sent you some stuff - but it sounds like Metro-E is probably out of your price range

I am also curious on this metro thing. just invited you on skype but will most prob chat tomorrow cos want to see the technology and how it works

The MetroNet is based around microwave technology with a dedicated dish and carrier grade equipment at each end of the link. It is a dedicated link between two or more location and there is no contention.

The product is aimed at the corporate market however - definitely not something that you would setup at home :p It is intended for providing high availability connectivity of a much higher quality than the basic iBurst Wireless service. Its also available at speeds of up to 155mbps.

If you are not scared off by the monthly rates starting at around R7k (excluding internet access) per month then give me a shout and I can tell you more about the products :D
