Nokia 5230 modem not connected in PC Suite

Hi

My wife just got a laptop with Win 7Pro 64 bit. I connected my Nokia 5230 via miniUSB and all worked fine for using it as if it was a usb storage device. I then installed PC Suite (I don't like OVI !) but PC Suite does not connect with the phone. I connect the phone via the cable and choose "PC Suite" on the phone. After a while, a balloon comes up saying :

"Port #0001.Hub_#0004 connected in a non-compatible mode.":(

When going through PC Suite's connection Wizard, after a while this balloon pops up together with an error message saying that I need to swith to PC Suite mode from the phone's UI. I do this, but everything stays the same.

I then grabbed my wife's old Nokia 5310 Expressmusic and connected it to th usb cable. Within seconds it was connected and I was on the Internet !

Problem is, the 5310 does not support 3G where the 5230 is 3.5G, so I'd really like to go a bit faster !

I have to note that I really don't need PC Suite. I only need the phone as a modem.

I would appreciate any help.

Ok, I have a 5230 aswell and use it as a modem as you described through pc suite although myne works 100% so I can't offer much advise other than to try check for updates for the phone and pc suite and maybe reinstall pc suite. Sorry not very helpfull I know.
Can I ask where you got the data transfer cable? My 5230 didn't come with a cable so maybe it could be a wrong connector?
Otherwise you can try search for a stand-alone modem driver but my quick google hasn't come up with much...

I was also concerned about this, but after successfully connecting the 5310, didn't think it was an issue. (AFAIK, it is the last version of PCSuite). Next step is probably then to install OVI.

I did reinstall PC Suite and anything related to Nokia. Did not help. I'm not sure how to unistall the phone completely so that when I plug it in again, it is reintroduced to Windows.
I also thought about the cable thing, but the cable is a standard mini USB cable (The 5230 does not have the large port on the bottom with the plastic hooks and copper pins !)

Call MTN/SP.

You can configure the modem without Nokia OVI/PC suite. You dial the connection from the network options area. Check you have the phone installed as a modem in Device Manager.

Dial *99# (as the number for dial up). SP call centre will be able to confirm this.
 
You can also try downloading and installing the latest version on NSU from http://europe.nokia.com/softwareupdate because it has the latest drivers for all phones. I also don't like Ovi Suite and last week I tried to get a C5 working with PC Suite, but PC Suite did not recognize it. After installing the newest version of Software Updater it worked fine.

Will be great if I don't even need PC Suite/OVI. But I checked to see whether the phone shows up as a modem and there's nothing !
 
With NSU you can actually get a connection without PC Suite or Ovi Suite. Because NSU installs the required drivers on your machine the phone should show up as a modem afterwards.
If you have bluetooth you can actually just add a COM port after the phone is paired with the PC and then install the "Standard Bluetooth Modem" on that COM port. This works great with el-cheapo 2xxx range Nokias.
 
Thanks. I will have a look at that...I suppose that will work with a Bluetooth adaptor as well ? (No built-in bluetooth :( )

Isn't Internet over Bluetooth slower than through the cable ?
 
Most bluetooth V1.2 devices will allow for 1mbps so it should be OK. However on a phone like the 5230 I suppose you are better off with USB. Older EDGE only devices have no performance hits over bluetooth.
 
I don't know much about these things, but if I have a V1.2 bluetooth adaptor connected to the laptop , where does it get slower, with the bluetooth capacity of the 5230, or with the 3.5G connection ? (When I browse with the phone, there is a 3.5G icon in the top left corner).

The conector for the 5230 is a CA-101 cable - I use a blackberry one, works fine. I guess though if it was the wrong cable it probably wouldn't fit but maybe its worth double checking
Ok, its a long shot cause i see it worked fine as a usb device...

I've now downloaded the 35MB installation file, NokiaSoftwareUpdaterSetup_EN.exe. here at the office and will be copying it to a flash disk to take home to the laptop.

Do you think I will be able to completely install it without an internet connection ?

Thanks Pdonut. It's worth investigating. I've looked at some images of the ca101 and it looks the same, but is CA-101 printed somewhere on the cable that I can check ?
 
Yes, NSU installs without internet connectivity. You only need internet if you want to actually update the phone. But NSU will bring the needed drivers with it.

I'm connected !

NSU did the trick. After installation the "Nokia 5230 USB Modem" was present. But when I tried to dial it (There's a Nokia GSM Phone USB Modem (OTA) available as a "Dial Up and VPN") the phone gives a "Subscribe to packet data first" error. This happened with the 5310 as well.
So I tried something I read somewhere....go to Modems (there is now a 5230 and a 5310 available after alternately connecting them), choose the connected one, click Properties and Advanced. Type in....AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","INTERNET".

After this I restarted, reconnected the phone , went to Network and sharing, clicked Connect or disconnect, choose "Nokia GSM Phone USB Modem (OTA)" and connect ! 2 seconds and it's done.


No PC Suite or OVI installed
 
Glad you could sort it out :) NSU seems to be the best option if you want the most up to date drivers for your Nokia on a computer.

The Subscribe to Packet Date message means it does not know the APN - great that you sorted it with the extra initialization string, that is actually the standard and best way of dealing with access point definitions on any GSM modem.

BTW - where about in Stellenbosch are you ?

Nice - you should get good HSPA+ coverage their. My office is in Paradyskloof so we get great coverage from the tower on golf course but my home is in Welgevonden and there 3G coverage is patchy sometimes. Although I have managed 7.2mbps a while ago with a E-172 USB modem ;)
