so my buddy got his 5800 yesterday.. i'm with autopage so i'll have to wait a while for my own.

i got to spend a little time playing with it..

i will be comparing it with N73 which i found to be an excellent phone.

ok, first impressions...

firstly, forget all the negative reviews we've been seeing all over the web.. this phone is everything it was said to be..

the phone itself is beautiful, there were comments on the web that the phone woud appear plasticky, but i can assure you it looks very very good in the hand.

size wise its very much similar to my N73, only very very slightly smaller, but a lot lighter, its very easy to handle and use with one hand.

it looks a lot nicer in hand than any of the pics you've seen on the web, i promise.

phone is tough and clearly very well put together, it doesnt creak or anything in the hand and all. unlike my trusty N73 lol

touch interface: very responsive. you only have to apply slight pressure to register a key press.

the slight vibration you get when it registers a key press is very effective as haptic feedback. very very nice feature! actually almost feels like you pressed a button.

i have quite large hands and yet i could type with ease.

writing recognition works very well. we from cape town so you can imagine the first thing we scribbled on the screen lol, and it recognised the letters effortlessly, even his terrible scrawl.

screen: awesome! huge, bright. colours are vivid!

video playback is fine, no glitches at all. even large size files play without problems.

the phone is very responsive. no lag to speak of. again, much faster than my benchmark N73.

autorotate between landscape and portrait is quick too.

volume and sound : 5800 is a lot louder than my already loud N73, and also much better sound quality.

music library updated very quickly and the phone even restarts very quickly.

the user interface: typical S60, with a few tweaks, many people spoke about the single / double tap navigation, for me this was no issue, it reminds me of when i use windows XP, one click to select object, a double click to execute. no problemo.

phone came with 8GB card, stand, a nifty cover, tv out cable, mini usb cable etc.. lots of goodies in the box and lots of music and video content pre-loaded on the phone.

if you like nokia phones and you like the ease of symbian, i'd say you gonna love the 5800.

What did you type?

Nice! I can't wait for MTN to get their act together and get this phone onto their specials list already!

i never checkedm but what is the code to type in for that again? then i'll get back to you.

Don't know. I've read that there have been 2 firmware updates which improve the phone responsiveness/bug fixes... I think v20.xxx is the latest firmware.

I decided to get this phone on contract upgrade (talk 120). And I also decided to scrap the vodacom firmware (since they never seem to have updates).

I am now running V20.0.012, which updated various things, including geo-tagging in pictures, a dictionary and some icons, I think it is also running a bit faster. :D

Man, I so want this phone (with the new firmware) and I see that iTalk cellular have it on an MTN contract (from Mid Feb) for R235pm ... Wonder when MTNSP will get their act together...

My phone came from Hong Kong :D and there was no firmware upgrade available. I have however found a way to upgrade the firmware ;) but it changed the product code so it will probably invalidate the [nonexistent?] warantee.

"Accelerometer sensor for auto-rotate" by the looks of things this is an iphone killer for sure

Thou 81 MB internal memory...up to 16GB card will do..lmao

HSDPA, 3.6 Mbps....goood!

kwel phone from my side, and the price wise looks better than the iphone deal that vodacom gives vs what this dude got..
