NOKIA 5800: FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Apparantly, according to someone at MTN who shouldnt have said anything, this phone will be available on a MTN 100 @ R149/month (Mtnsp). The new MTNSP deals are supposed to be out today or tomorrow (Just spoke to the a branch manager... they dont have them yet)

If this true, they are going to struggle to keep up with the demand.

I DISAGREE!

well, this is what that popular website (...rhymes with BSMARENA) lists as the main disadvantages of the 5800, so either they got there hands on a handset that was very very buggy, or.. i dunno..so here is what they say and my comments based on the handset i've handled here in Cape Town are in red

Main disadvantages:
Limited 3rd party software availability no duh, its a completely new OS, and yes it is actually quite different to S60 3rd edition, but new apps will come in droves.
UI is still immature with somewhat dodgy user experience i have not found the interface to be buggy at all, i just needed to find my way around a bit, but i had no real problems, bear in mind the phone version i checked out is still the first v10.0.010, so with firmware upgrades it should be even better
Touchscreen sensitivity not the best in the class the touch screen works wonderfully, registers touches very easily and responsively
No smart dialing this is a disadvantage? i hardly use smart dialing.
Poor image quality and no GPS geotagging (geotagging is now added via firmware update) the image quality is just about equal to an n73, this is a music minded phone not a image solution and yes, the GPS geotagging is now added
Touch web browser not quite polished since when is "not quite polished" a trainsmash? ok this is debatable i guess, if you surf the web a lot from your mobile. i do, but i find operamini is the best, especially in terms of data usage which is not free or cheap here in SA
No voice-guided navigation license a six month licence is included in the SA vodacom retail package
No office document editing out-of-the-box thats why the pay in is not R6000. mind you, i wonder when we'll get an "open office" for mobile phones.. anyone have any ideas on this?
Doesn't charge off microUSB ok so who walks around with their laptop to charge their phone?

l

By the way, how does Opera Mini work on the 5800? I use Opera Mini most of the time and hardly ever use the standard browser on my E61i.

i'll get him to load it and get back to you guys on its performance etc, but as far as i know from europe users it works quite well..

installed it a few minutes ago.. works fine, but its easier to operate with the stylus than with my groot fingers! looks really good on that huge screen too!

nice phone... wish i had a bit of extra cash in the month to go onto a contract with MTN...

I'd get it in a heartbeat!!!

does MTN have the 5800? i couldnt find it on their website anywhere...

its difficult enough as it is to get thru a vodacom SP other than vodacom direct..

I really wish it's true, but.... that's highly unlikely. Anyway, the guy at the MTN shop near me said hea hasn't heard a thing about the release of this phone on MTN. I seen it on the latest Vodashop contracts, so let's hope MTN can get it quick enough. I'm already due for an upgrade and can't wait too long!
