NOKIA 5800 Tips Tricks & Apps Thread.....

While branding of firmware on phones is rather annoying I would stay away from eMpTy eeN as a network.

Just use Nemesis Software Suite and change the product code of your 5800 to one of the european ones.
Yeah that voids the warranty... while getting a normal phone and updating the firmware doesnt.
If you dont like the network get the phone toss the sim and use your VC sim. Theres nothing wrong with MTN's network btw

I have a VC 5800 and I called one of the Vodacare outlets,
spoke to a tech support guy and he basically explained to me that VC, when upgrading firmware on the 5800 debrand it themselves!!
They use a new product code given to them by nokia mea.
He gave me the code, I debranded my phone and it updated fine.
If your giving it in for repairs, all you do is rebrand it back to your original code.

simple.

Does this remove all the Vodafone branding?
Can you pm me or email me instructions for this? (Maybe you happened to call the friendliest Vodacom Tech Guy in the country, and the rest wont be so friendly :P)

So, in that case, I'd leaning towards a Vodacom contract.
Thanks man :)

All fine and well, but why make you jump through hoops in the first place??

I'll stick with MTN. Better quality network IMO (7 years of experience on the network + working in the industry helps somewhat).

Depends on were you stay and so far, in Noordwyk Midrand, I had a better experience with VC 3G than with MTN 3G.

Just my 2c.

Also in Noordwyk, SB. No problems thus far. I guess we're both subjective. ;)

I'm waiting for my 5800 - hoping to be able to contribute to the thread once I'm up and running.

:) No problem dude,
there is no vodafone branding to begin with, the phone is clean when you get it, and the same after upgrade.
Honestly, i dont think they'll know the difference.

Also, the upgrade is NECESSARY to enjoy the phone, out of the box, it is absolutely unresponsive.
Now, it's an absolute breeze to use.

There is no info on that site about any new features, i guess there will be some feature updates and more bug fixes.

New firmware (V21) brings the following updates:
Here are nokiAAddict first impressions:

1. Quicker booting up - It seems to let you ‘take control’ a lot quicker than before.
2. As mentioned before you can make the menu button ‘breathe’ when the phone is in standby (but I think I may have found a small bug in that it appears to switch back to ‘off’ by itself! Not a good start!)
3. Music Player is showing BIG cover art - something that annoyed me in V20 was the fact the cover art was shrunk.
4. No longer switches predictive text off after you’ve used the Full Screen QWERTY keyboard and gone back to the regular keypad.
5. ‘Applications’ has been renamed ‘Apps’ - ‘Music Player’ is now ‘Music plyr.’ (These could be due to it using HK firmware)
6. Still no Widgety goodness on the home screen - it’s as it was in V20.
