Nokia 6630

Nice phone, but, when is somebody going to bring out a Wi-Fi (i.e. WireLess Lan) compliant cell phone? I don't want to buy an adapter for VOIP on LAN. Any why must I use bluetooth? Cmon manufacturers, get with the program.

Sorry about that, will use Private Messages from now on.
No problem - it's just that the thread & forum can easily get distracted by one or more "advertising" type posts, which is completely avoided if such info is passed via private message :).

Hey V3G - I see that Vodafone have approved the 6630, and seem to recall that you guys follow on their certifications for VLive branded phones. This mean that we can expect 6630 handsets soon on Vodacom? I was speaking to a mate of mine in London earlier who has the 6680, and he was complaining bitterly about it. Says its much slower than his 6630? and that the battery life isnt particularly good either. Ran a search on google, and a LOT of people share his opinion on 6630 vs 6680. I just hope nokia dont have a dud with the 6680....

I hope you're right!. Currently in Vodacom, the 6630 has taken a backseat to the 6680.

Does anybody have any new infromation regarding the release date of the Nokia 6680? I can't wait anymore for my new cellphone, if it isn't coming in May I will have so settel for the Nokia 6670... :(

I c that the 6630 has USB2 support which means that it can transmit 480Mbps.

Reason I am saying this is course I want to know whether I should buy the data card or the 6630 phone.

What is the advantages and disadvantages of using the phone in place of the card.

It all depends on your usage pattern.

If you do very little data stuff, a phone would be more suited as you would not need to pay for a data card, either outright or as part of a contract.

On the other end of the scale, if you do a lot of data, all the time, a data card is the most logical solution as it frees your phone up for voice applications and removes the hassle of making the modem connection.

The break-over point is somewhere in between and probably varies from person to person. I'd say anything over 100 Mb per month would warrant a data card, although I'm sure forumites do much more with their phones.

V3g,

I have a friend that has a Data Card already. We tested with my SIM and it works on the Vodacom network and he wants to get a Data Contract but doesn't want a card but rather a phone instead. How or where can I find out if this is possible since he doesn't need voice and wants to use the phone on prepaid since he uses data more ?

Thanks

Hi Tahir
A couple of things re your post :
1. The 6630 does have a camera for video calls - its an external jack that you plug the phone into when required.
2. The 6630 is available in the UK on VLive. It isnt available here on Vodacom because of some firmware issues with the phone on Vodacoms network (it hogs the 1800Mhz band when roaming on GSM for one). These issues have been addressed with a firmware upgrade, and you can in fact get support for this phone whilst using the Vodacom network now (I have a 6630 and got plenty of support from Vodacom when originally hooking up to their 3G network for testing purposes).
3. The 6680 will be launched round about the same time on MTN. Vodacom will not have a competitive advantage to market with this handset as you have implied.
4. All of this is a mute point because the phone is available on MTN and this is an MTN forum. Vodacom's compatability is irrelevant.
4. This is not the correct forum for posting contract pricing for Vodacom - please keep those sort of posts to the Vodacom forum where they will be more useful.

Cheers -

The nokia 6630 has not been approved by Vodacom because it does not have A BUILT IN 3G video camera.Like a mention before the 6680 will be availabe in May from Vodacom. There are so many phones Vodafone has and Vodacom will not launch them because they dont meet Vodacom requirements..............Vodacom will have an advantage on 3g because they have a 6/8 months lead for coverage......Look like some one is the weakest link fror launching 3G late.

Ok, so it is the 16th of May, past the middle of May and does anybody have new information on the Nokia 6680?

Why do I get the feeling that we will only be seeing this Nokia 6680 by the end of June, that is if we are lucky...
