Nokia 6680

Yep, I'm now going month-by-month.

The reason I decided not to wait for a 3G phone is because I need a phone with a Symbian OS and as far as I know, this means either the Nokia 6630 or Nokia 6680 and as you've already said, thats not going to be anytime soon.

So, yes, it is indeed a shame that I have to wait another 24 months before I can experience 3G. I feel Vodacom was silly to release a service before the right tools were available. I can't believe we can only choose between the Motorola E1000 or the Motorola E1000. Great choice.

It's more a function of the handset manufacturers being slow with handsets than one of Vodacom launching prematurely. Just think how the poor Brits feel. They've had 3G for a while now and no proper handsets.

There will be a few more handsets released shortly. Look on the forum for some reviews.

PS. If you're on a monthly contract, why do you need to wait 24 months? As soon as the phone you want is out, do an upgrade.

My phone is quite old and doesn't have the features I need for my business use. So I need to upgrade my phone asap - I've already put it off for over a month now. So because the 3G phone I need has not been released yet and won't be anytime soon, I have no option but to get a non 3G phone and then wait for 2 years before I get to upgrade again. I wish I could wait a few more months to get the phone I want, but alas, thats just not possible.

Sweet looking phone - I'd be interested in one but not as an upgrade. As a foreigner I'm amazed that people here are willing to sign 24 month contracts. When I first moved here I got my first vodacom phone on a 12 month contract which was fine with me as that the way its done in most other countries. Now I rely on the charity of my overseas friends who get upgraded annually.

You're right a 24 month contract is absolutely crazy. I'm actually extremely against any contracts. I won't sign a contract with anyone other than Vodacom. I've been with them for so many years now and I've been extremely happy. Plus I usually get a really nice phone, so in my mind, it's really like paying off the phone over 2 years.

I heard from a Vodacom Service Provider that the Nokia 6680 will be released by Vodacom some time in May, I really hope this is true because I can't wait for the Nokia 6680, my cotract expires this month but I'm gonna wait for the phone I want.

Dows anybody have a more precise ETA for the Nokia 6680?

Samsung

wait for the new samsung 3G phone range coming out soon. I only buy nokia and samsung. I have had nothing but problems with Nokia(6610,6230)

got a d500 now...works brilliantly but no 3g tho

Does anybody have any new infromation regarding the release date of the Nokia 6680? I can't wait anymore for my new cellphone, if it isn't coming in May I will have so settel for the Nokia 6670... :(

The 6680 was approved this week, so now it's a question of getting it to the channel. Have asked for ETA. Will revert as soon as I have more info.

I played around with a 6680 today. Must say, first impressions were very good. Initial (completely subjective) feel is that the battery life is better than the E1000.

Is there anything that doesn't have better battery life than the E1000? Heck, I've used flares that lasted longer ;)

Until to you get the ETA, do you have a vague notion of how long the approval-to-channel usually takes, vodacom3g?

Can't remember that I've seen this being discussed previously - will the 6680 be able to browse "normal" web sites, or only WAP? I got a E1000 (Motorola) since numerous web sites indicated that it could browse normal web sites - only after getting the phone, I realised that this is not the case, making the E1000 an expensive paper weight to me. I don't want to make the same (expensive) mistake again. From the Nokia web site: "# WAP 2.0 HTML/HTML multimode browser; Improved Web compatibility with support for HTML 4.01, including support for elements such as image maps, background images, and frames".

Eventually there are dinosaurs on the dinosaur tour? Any news on that oh-so-anticipated ETA?

Doesn't the N6680 also come out with the Opera mobile browser? It does a good job on my 6600 rendering plain webpages - as long as you know the page well (i.e., know where what is located). Pages that you don't know looks very confusing.

I don't know about the WAP 2.0/ HTML multimode browser - perhaps they decided to incorporate the two (wap & 'normal internet'). Hope this helps?

Well, still no news on when Vodacom will release a Nokia 3G phone in this country. However, it was quite amusing for me to visit an MTN store today with a friend of mine. When I asked about the 6630, the salesman took four steps and fetched the phone, new and sealed in the box, for me. Told him I was with Vodacom, so not to worry about me. Quite amusing that there's a 3G phone from MTN, but no 3G network, and Vodacom's had a 3G network for 6 months, but no Nokia 3G phone.

He told me to think about MTN. I'm not convinced...
