Nokia 8 Sirocco

Ok, so I've had the Sirocco for a week now and I'm still very happy with it :)

Here's a mini review ...

Firstly, since I got the Sirocco, its battery hasn't died once. Here's why (just took this screenshot now):

Screen: colours are bright and images pop every bit as much as I'd want them to. Looks better than my old Samsung Galaxy S6, and Samsungs are meant to have saturated colours.

Camera: Pretty good. Also sharper than my old S6, and the HDR is effective. Having a dual lens helps. So it's no Mate 20 Pro, but this is one area I can forgive it considering I got it on Vodacom's Black Friday special for R165/month (sure beats the pants off all other entry-level phones). Some samples:

Negatives: Reading reviews of this a lot was said about the colour cast on the screen when tilting it. In the real world, that isn't an issue because you look at the phone straight-on. Same for the "distortion" at the curved edges ... I've gotten used to that already. The one thing that bugs me a little is the curved edges are less sensitive to taps, and some websites (like Mybroadband) have buttons right in the damn edges lol. About the last issue is that there isn't a lot of fun software to play with (e.g. Samsung has phone themes to easily change button styles - this doesn't, not natively anyway).

Closing words: the Sirocco feels like it was designed to have everything you need and nothing you don't. Details like the thick charging cable (my flimsy Samsung cables got damaged over months of use) and braided cable for the bundled headphones are appreciated. I'd keep an eye on Nokia ... they may be going places in the future :)

Take the shitty stock Launcher off and put on nova or apex and go have fun with themes.

Get the Google Pixel Camera app from XDA, it will improve the image quality.

Turn wifi off and run it on 3g or lte to see how an average south African would survive with the battery please.

Why? I find it clean and easy to use

you realise he would only use wifi at home or work if that is where he took the screenshot
everywhere else he would be on mobile network

He wanted themes, as launchers go the stock one is the most basic out there, it does the bare minimum. It's the first thing I remove from every phone I buy.

Both apex and nova will also give you access to the full Google now which is only available officially in the stock Launcher in USA, to be honest Google now can be damned useful.

Toss in things like themes, size and grid controls, I used to go mad with all of that, used to have a lot of very specific things in very specific places on exactly 3 screens, and as time went buy it became simpler and simple, now I use niagara, which is like the simplest, cleanest Launcher I have ever used, paired with the linebit icon pack its awesome.

I only run mines on LTE since I have the mtn data contract.

Definitely brilliant battery management. Spent a lot of time on YouTube, Web browsing and social media apps.

Nope. They said it was next in line, but since then Pie came out on the Nokia 5 or something. Taking their sweet time with the Sirocco.

Anyone tried wireless charging with the Sirocco? Does any QI charger work with it?
Is wireless charging even any good these days, last I tried it, you needed to be silly prescice.and it charged slower than the battery drained.

I used my old Samsung wireless charger and it does charge but slowly with the cover on. Never tried it without the cover

Is that a special wireless charging cover or just the clear plastic cover that comes in the box with the phone?
