No you worded it just fine. His point is that he expects anyone to pass judgement only after playing with it, instead of just being disappointed with the specs.

However, there's nothing wrong with being disappointed with the specs, they are the perfect way to determine if this phone is going to keep up with the competition. When said competition is already ahead with devices from a year ago, you know this phone is going to be facing an uphill battle.

Also, when you're the underdog, late-to-the-party, trying-to-get-ahead manufacturer/software provider, you can't come with products that are inferior or "as good as" the competition.
