Nokia (and Microsoft) versus Android and Apple

Much the same as BlackBerry's situation with the new OS... This will either make or break them. Next year is going to be really interesting in the mobile space.

Android and Apple are here to stay, that we know, personally I don't think BB is going to make the cut and Nokia/Microsoft are going to end up with 10-20% marketshare. But that's just my 2c worth.

I've had Nokia sice 1998, just hope they make it make into the game, cos they were falling behind so far :)

And it's official - Nokia is back in the game. The biggest challenge is shaking the "Microsoft OS on a phone is bad" mindset created by Windows Mobile 6. Initial reviews are quite positive.

I do hope they make a success with this for a change as it'll be a shame to be left with only Droids and Apples in year from now. MS should bring some interesting options to the table and keep the other two honest with their pricing I reckon.

the funnies thing about this is that all android manufacturer pay royalties to Microsoft from samsung to htc due to patent infringements so M$ is making millions off andriod phones and wp 7 phones the can't lose either way

so its andriod (microsoft) , nokia (microsoft) vs apple .....and RIM is .....

Great, hope its arrival drops all the smartfonez prices.
A good droid kind of pricey for me.

I agree with the article that Nokia needs to really blow this one out of proportion.

Nokia haven't been good for a long long time. Fortunately with a touchscreen phone they won't have their banal button design that I so very much hate. Competition is always good so lets see if their new flagship phone will be able to hold up against the current slew of bigger, better and faster phones.

The way mobile phone development is going at the moment reminds me of the computer boom about a decade ago when your brand new PC was almost obsolete within 6 months.

Great news. I hope WP7 is successful and RIM can sort their **** out too with QNX. 2012 promises to be a great year for smartphones and consumers.

That perception was actually created from years of using anything from Microsoft, not just WinMo6. They still have a problem with building quality products, which makes me think that once they get more market share we may start to see more complaints like "great hardware, but the software screwed up in some obscure way"

That Nokia looks like it will attract a lot of interest from the non technical market that don't know what an OS is, or don't care about what an OS is.

I hope Nokia can make it back. If for no other reason, competition is healthy.

I am a huge Android fanboi but I wish Nokia/Microsoft well. There needs to be more competition to keep Google/Apple on their toes. And frankly when has more choice been a bad thing.

Nokia should stick to what they do best - make simple, cheap but tough phones, for the maid, artisan, plumber, mechanic etc. They make good phones that can make a call and receive a call, and they are tough enough to be drop kicked. There is a huge market for this type of phone, and it is a sector that they excel in.
But they should stay away from trying to make smart phones - they will continue to get their fingers burnt. They cannot compete with Apple and Android in the smart phone sector

I tend to agree. Nokia used to be a great phone manufacturer, if nothing else their phones had the best battery life ever.

I really think that Nokia has hit the rock that has the oil! their hardware side of the phone was always great but lot the plot at times with the OS. It might be too late. They need to up the OVI store above the level of the Itunes Store!
The 3 phone are all really smart phones but they need to look at the business(music & apps) side as well. Apple did a good job with this.

Yes, and Competition = Better prices. The Nokia 710 is already quite affordable.

Time and time again people forget one massive thing when they compare Nokia to the rest -> Series40

Nokia owns the mainstream market of feature phones which gives it an endless supply of resources to pretty much do what it likes on the smartphone front.

Two other things missing from this article is Symbian^3 with its new Belle update and MS integration apps coming soon. It is also conveniently skipping that fact that you will be able to run android apps on Meego.

The only reason I'm still with nokia is because of the maps. I travel a lot and don't like shlepping an extra gps around. It their new OS works well and has some decent apps, I might just stay with them
