Nokia (and Microsoft) versus Android and Apple

Nokia should stick to what they do best - make simple, cheap but tough phones, for the maid, artisan, plumber, mechanic etc. They make good phones that can make a call and receive a call, and they are tough enough to be drop kicked. There is a huge market for this type of phone, and it is a sector that they excel in.
But they should stay away from trying to make smart phones - they will continue to get their fingers burnt. They cannot compete with Apple and Android in the smart phone sector

and battery life...i like my s2 but they could've made it bigger...i don't mind....but a days worth of battery sucks.

One thing I think nokia might be able to give us is an Apple competitor with good battery life. Thats something that doesn't exist in the world of Android.

Symbian, ANY Symbian, sucks. End of. Nobody cares what Nokia's doing there. WP7 is interesting. Meego was interesting until they wrecked it. Symbian is a zombie corpse.
You do realise that the company owning Symbian is Accenture, and they are not exactly what you call a small company - quite the opposite. Add to that the fact that Symbian^3 Belle is miles ahead of what ever android or apple fluff you might adore. Go read the reviews.

Are you sitting on the same organ you are thinking with? You advocate focusing on one target audience and putting all your eggs in one basket? Mmmm, I think I have my answer to what you use for thinking.

Nokia is the biggest phone maker on earth - that is what they do best. They are do that by building many phones for many market segments using a variety of technologies. Do you realise they have more screen technologies than Apple has phone models? That's just one silly example of how much bigger and more geared they are for being global leaders. On a global scale smartphones is a very small segment of the mobile phone population.

That being said, they do make excellent smartphones, whether they dual boot Meego/Android or run Windows Mobile or Symbian^3, you can always rely on the fact that the hardware is top notch and that you have more freedom to do more on these devices.

You will find that its not because of the OS but more about the ability, people already complaining about iOS 5 and battery life, I have seen simular problems with Mango.

The more a phone can do, the more power it needs, simple fact of life, and that is another problem with the 800 vs 710, the 800 you can not swap the battery out when you run out of juice.

I am sure Nokia's large volumes certain bring comfort to their board and shareholders when looking at these results:

Excuse me while i piss myself laughing.. Symbian being miles ahead of android or iOS...

Symbian is currently only just holding station about iOS, and is being smoked by Android left right and centre in terms of market share.

Both iOS and Android far outsell WP7 - so much so, that WP7 is almost a rounding error in the statistics.
Apple sold more iPhone 4S in 3 days (4m), than MS sold WP7 in 1 year.
So I don't see how MS can be considered a competitor.

You have to start somewhere. iOS and Android also started slowly - WP7 is about on a par with their sales figures after its first year in the market. Let's see if Nokia+Mango is the combo they need to see iOS/Android type sales figures going forward.

All I can say is that the people bashing Symbian^Belle are sounding a bit like OS fanbois!

Sure it might not be bleeding edge, but it's pretty, slick and fast, functional, and runs perfectly on my N8. I couldn't be happier. In a different league to Anna.

I'm sure I'd enjoy an Android too (my sisters' iPhone4 seems pretty nice as well), but Belle is so beautiful and works perfectly, I have no need :)

I think it's going to be difficult to convince people to use Windows Phone after:
  • WM6.5 nightmares
  • Zune disappointment
  • Kin cancellation
  • PlaysForSure resentment
Might be a bit difficult to convince them to trust MS.

I suspect there are Nokia loyalists who will get a Nokia handset for Nokia not WP7.

Q. Why's it call Windows Phone, when it has no windows, and has nothing to do with Windows OS?

I suspect you give people too much credit... Ppl get over things very quickly. Apple disappointed MANY ppl with the Newton, and with that initial iPhone (the Motorola abortion)...

WP7 is pretty, and it works very well and thats ultimately all that matters.

Bru, its time for you to Emerge And See. Belle only goes on sale this month and the reason you are seeing it in your iRearview is because its coming to lap the rest.

Is this like all the other predictions you've made about Symbian which haven't really come true?..

Roux, I'm all for more options in the market place.. but Symbian is in its death cycle, whereas things like iOS, Android, WP7 etc are just starting out really.

The features of these newly presented phones should have been class leading. They seem rather "me-too" from what i've investgated

Prediction that have not come true, mmm I think people saying Symbian is dead and then pow! First Anna and now Belle - yeah, thats more like not really coming true.

Sure, Symbian is on a decline and the reason is very obvious, it lagged behind.
Will it increase its market share? no I don't think so.
Is it dead? definitely not, and it won't be dead for quiet sometime.

First Symbian, one of the slowest OS's...
Then Maemo....
And now Win 7...
What OS next?
I see, and how does it affect you and your buying decision? You do of course know Symbian is alive and kicking with future development planned for it. Maemo is now Meego and the N9 is just about to launch, Win Phone 7 seems to be OK, Series40 is dominating the world (oh wait, you have no clue what Series40 is).
