Nokia has today announced that they will make their mapping and navigation solution (smart2go) available for free download. Initially available for S60 and Windows Mobile 5 it will later become available for other platforms. It is the same solution that is found in the Nokia N95. Mapping and route planning will be available free, but turn by turn voice navigation will be a premium service. Location is via any Bluetooth GPS.

Mapping and routing is available in over 100 countries with turn by turn navigation (at street level) available in 30 countries. Mapping can be downloaded over the air from a remote server or cross loaded from a PC. The application includes the ability to search by address (including postcode), view by category (nearest point of interest) and plan routes (show directions).

A Bluetooth GPS will be needed for positioning for those devices without a GPS built in.

There will also be a companion PC application that allows you to cross load (install) maps of specific areas to your phone. This will mean it will not be necessary to download maps over the air. You will be able to take the maps that you want with you. Nokia refer to this combined download from PC and download over the air solution a hybrid and that it is 'the best of both worlds'.

Nokia will be offering premium services, these include the aforementioned turn by turn navigation, but will also include city guides and other premium content. At a later date it will be possible to book services (e.g. a hotel) through the application, and advertising may appear at a future date.

Nokia will pre-install Nokia Maps in new Nseries devices and the software will be available as a free download (Smart2Go) for existing S60 devices.

YES. YOU CAN DOWNLOAD THE FREE SOUTH AFRICA MAP (29MB). Go to www.smart2go.com/en.

I just love all this stuff mobile phones are capable of.

I'm having a problem with loading the SA map onto my phone using maploader. It keeps telling me that I don't have a USB connection.

I've tried both USB & BT without success.

Maps asks for a BlueTooth connection upon startup.

Went and searched for my home address and it found it, so I guess I don't need to download anything.

Right. Now I have to get myself a bluetooth gps device. Any suggestions?

Get a holux.

The GPSlim 236 is a nice one, or the GPSlim240 if you want to be supercool (like me :D)

But any BT GPS with a Sirf3 chip will do ya.

1st point - you can us ethe map without having a GPS receiver - you can also search the map for restaurants etc. using your internet access point.

2nd point - go into your menu and select CONNECTIVITY - then choose DATA CABLE - then choose MASS STORAGE as your mode.
Your phone goes into mass storage mode, which is offline mode. The maploader needs to use this mode to download the map files.
Alternately, remove your miniSD card and plug it into your pc directly with a card reader.
Remember the map software must be loaded on your phone first, before downloading the South African map

So without the GPS unit, is this app better than Nav4all?

the map is free , the navigation is not free

You can still find places eg, enter the street name, or even the area code, it brings up a map, you can select the place eg: a shopping mall then create a route from where you are to where you want to go, it creates it, but just the route you need to follow, it doesnt map your every movement because its not coupled with a live tracking system(GPS) but all the names of the roads are there to be followed. Its still very very useful.

GPS toys make you dof and then you can't read a paper map... :D

But it's nice to have, especially when trying to navigate in an unknown area at night...

I laughed when somebody (who was visiting for my daughter's birthday) told me that his GPS showed a totally different route... :D

mmmmmmmmm a 29 MB map ... Handymap has maps for South Africa which is about 200 MB ... that is a huge difference ... i wonder how good the Nokia stuff is

Thanks for the explanation. :)

No problem, you going to try it?
Nah - I live in PE. If you manage to get lost here you're probably not bright enough to switch a cellphone on :D

Is there a way to download maps to pc and load them to your phone without being online. I ask this because I use my phone for internet connectivity and its kinda impossible to load the maps directly to my phone when its being used as a modem.
