I ain't no expert on all OSs but I do a lot of reading. I am hesitant to mention specifics when I am not an expert on the topic hence me being general before but...

True multi-tasking for one. The ability to function smoothly on minimal resources another.

And I am seeing things being implemented on the other OSs that were once ridiculed on Symbian. Again you are likely to ask for specifics but again I am hesitant to offer them as I am basing it on hearsay.

Overall I find it interesting that any one would need convincing that Symbian was a far more mature OS than anything currently offered. I would not have thought that was debatable.

Its not because it was a better OS to release it on, it was simply an OS where they had direct access to the hardware and OS.

I am fully aware of the reasons. It was also five years in development so all the work would have been done on Symbian. The point is the newer OS was not ready for it. It does not change the fact that they were "forced" to release the innovation on an OS that their CEO seemingly despises.

Ah yes, I expected that. Yet we are all totally accepting of those who are condemning Symbian yet in the next breath admitting that the last device they used was an S60v3 device!

No some of us don't condemn it on user experience but a total piece of **** it is to develop for.

Windows Phone at least have a decent environment thats easy to pick up, Android gives you total power and iOS gives you loads of libraries. I have coded for both pure Symbian as well as some QT and trust me when I say I am sooooo glad I dont have to go back there.

It was the worse experience as a dev I ever had in my entire life.

Ah, there we go, we got to the crux of the matter. As a consumer I don't give a damn how easy it makes your life ;)

Well you should:
Dev = more apps = better phone experience.

No Dev = stock apps = feature/dumb phone.

Not very SMARTphone is it?

The three words "bandwagon", "jump" and "on" come to mind when I read comments like this. All of a sudden it has become popular to bash Symbian and everyone is doing it.

Oh please, if the developers could make money from it they would jump through fiery hoops, stick their heads in the mouths of lions and tightrope walk between the highest buildings... :)

They developed on that "awful piece of s..." platform for ages until the next cash cow came along. I am satisfied with what is already available for me on the Symbian platform. I know what I am getting into. When something else offers me what I am used to, or better, I'll move.

And I won't bother getting into that "smartphone" debate. Seems every man and his dog has his own interpretations.

Thought as much, and even then they also have Microsoft pockets to assist if push comes to shove.

Some of the cheapest quality (not smart) phones you can buy in SA today are Nokia.
Was in PEP yesterday waiting for my wife to buy some clothes, looked at the phones they have on display.
you can get a Nokia for around R120, I have bought one of these in the past (R99 back then) and they are rock solid.
kak screen and nothing but sms but for R120 you get a phone with a torch you can read in any light with a battery that lasts around 2 weeks a charge (including several hours of phone calls).

Symbian was not all that bad but it needed to be retired, just a pity they decided to only make windows phones, they would have done better to offer the same phone with more than one OS choice.

Of everyone here over 25 I am sure at least 80% have owned a nokia at some stage.

It would be interesting to find out what phone the majority of blue collar workers in this country have. I'd guess, based on my experience, that a fairly high percentage use Nokias.

A little side story.... A lady that works on our premises brought me here phone the other day asking if there was anything I could do to help as her grandson had dropped her Nokia in her cup of tea while her back was turned. I said I would try. I opened it up and the insides had a sticky dried tea with lots of sugar coating on it, I wiped everything dry, and put all the pieces in the sun to dry. After a few hours I put it all back together and charged it (with the same charger I currently use for my Nokia N8 even though her phone was probably 5 years old!) and lo and behold it started perfectly without issue.

Ha ha, quite funny you say that. I cycle at Giba Gorge regularly and we go for group rides with some of the rangers there three times a week. On the Friday ride the one chap half jokingly said he needs to get himself one of those "Nokia torches". He said the phone was great but he was really needing the torch too..... seems many other manufacturers just don't give a damn about this market. I hope Nokia doesn't lose focus of it either.
 
I find it quite interesting, and of course by interesting I mean feeble, how those who feel strongly about a certain opinion always seem to feel there can only be ONE other person who has a different opinion to theirs.

Perhaps we should troll the forum and find all those who are apple fan boys, and those who are android fan boys, and then post assumptions about them being one person. After all there is no possible way that more than one person can feel the same way about an OS or manufacturer.

Shame...
