Nokia indicates incoming support for Google apps

“If you're using Google we're not going to force you to use Ovi,” Petersen said.
They better otherwise ppl with vote with there wallets AGAIN and they will bleed money like they have been since android.

Indeed, and the writer did mention it and link to it in the article. What they're talking about here is native syncing on the phone (like when you set up an Android phone - you just type in the address & password and say what you want sync'd and voila) as opposed to having to go looking for a solution from someone else. Basically it's a way to make it more user-friendly for those who don't Google the hell out of everything until they either find a solution or find out that there is no such solution ;)

A good move by Nokia as they'd probably do a much more integrated job of it and it would then become a valuable feature for those on Android who're scared of losing their stuff(or just aren't up for the needless hassle) if they switch over.

Thanks for that, Hawkies.

It may not be 100% clear in the article, but Google Sync doesn't allow perfect integration with Google's services like native integration would. Testing it on the N8, for instance, revealed that you can only access your default calendar, and not other calendars you may have created or that are shared with you.

Contacts synchronisation can take up to 30 minutes before your Google contacts show up on the N8 the first time as well. Synchronising contacts from the phone back to Google didn't work reliably for me.

I stopped using Google Sync after a couple of mass duplications and deletions on both Calendar and Contacts. I use emoze now, with only 1-way sync and it's acceptable, but nothing like a completely native system like Android.

try nuevasync.

i'm really not understanding what the new thing is here.
nokia activesync (mail for exchange) supporting google (gmail and apps) has been around for ages, natively on e-series devices and as a client download on other devices

most people i know have a calendar here, an addressbook there and mail accounts all over the place
you've got to explicitly tell them that they can actually unify it all (and announce it as groundbreaking new tech like apple does), otherwise they assume it can't be done.
i guess sometimes companies have to make press releases just for public awareness?

it would be interesting to see what the new solution actually offers.
would be nice if they could support multiple 3rd party caldavs other than google as well.

In the context of the article I was only talking about Google apps. Gmail support is relatively decent, but Calendar and Contacts support on the new Symbian^3 devices is lacking.

Agreed. This is what I'm hoping for as well.

wonder what "proper" means in the context.

*Not* Google Sync. Because then it's Google providing a hack/service to support devices, and not the devices/mobile OSes supporting Google.
