quick question... i must be missing something... I've gotten a couple of vodacom access points registered on my n80, "internet.gprs", "vlive!" and "vodacom4me", none of them use 3g tho, only gprs. so where / how do i get my cell to connect using a 3g access point (given that i am getting 3g reception)? many thanks in advance

Not too sure about Vodacom - however, I assume that the phone with automatically connect at 3G if it picks up 3G reception and then it will step down to GPRS if the reception is not strong enough.

Perhaps you should post your query under the Vodacom section and address it to Vodacom3G - he is pretty good at answering those types of queries.

I have a Nokia N80 which is supplied by Nokia SA (they sponsor our television show, and as such we often get new phones way before they are available at retailers). I've been using it for the last three weeks, and I must say that I am very impressed indeed.

Surfing the net via 3G on the phone itself is fantastic. The browser is much easier than on the 6680 (which I had before), and the OS is much faster. Battery life is also better, though still not fantastic. Other great advances are: Much better screen, better camera (though I couldn't care less), key lock and an FM Radio. However, the WLAN function is the clincher. I have a wireless setup at home, using my 3G connection through a D-Link wireless router. Both my desktop and laptop already use this connection, and now I have my phone set up to do the same. It picked up and configured the LAN settings in seconds, and it is a joy to use.

Yazzo, the phone will use 3G whenever it is available, even though the access point is called internet.GPRS. Don't worry too much about it - this phone is fast and intelligent, and by far the best Nokia I've ever had.

Admittedly I have not yet done any video calls with it, nor have I used it to connect my laptop to the Internet. However, everything else is just great.

You should try Opera Mobile browser - it reformats normal web pages so that they load more quickly and are smaller in size - saving you money on downloading.

Another great application is WorldMate - daily weather forecast and exchange rates.

PM me for a list of sites where you can find free themes and software for the N80.

I have not seen MTN mention anything about the N80 as yet.
I suspect Vodacom has the phone, but are busy testing the video calling feature; they are also replacing the phone's firmware with their own version of VLive firmware - so release should be imminent.
CellC have the phone readily available - you can get it free of charge on an ActiveChat100 contract - R250pm for 100 free minutes anytime.

Your other alternative is to purchase the phone for cash - Nokia themselves have stock and are selling the phone for R5999. (N91 is the same price).

Interesting enough, the N80 I received from CellC is the silver one, and the one that Nokia are selling is the black one.

I wanted to confirm this: I called CellC Direct and spoke to a consultant named Faik. He said that they do not have the N80 but only the N70! I wonder where did u get yours???

CellC Direct are probably the most backward, technologically outdated SP there is. I have had no joy with them at all and have stopped dealing with them even though they are listed as my SP.

Your best bet is to go into a CellC store yourself and have a consultant phone the CellC distribution centre directly.

They have stock and will send it to you.

I got my N80 from the CellC store in N1 City, Cape Town after going in and asking them to check for it. I can highly recommend them. I can also recommend the CellC stores at Killarney Mall and Rosebank Mall, Johannesburg. They will go out of their way to help you, even deliver the phones to your work/home if necessary.

Ye, whatsup with the N80???

I have heard reports that the Vodafone software messes the N-series phones up thats why they don't work or crash on Vodacom??

Then take the phones in to Nokia to load THEIR firmware, no problems.

True or False??

What does the Vodafone firmware add that isn't available out of the box with the default Nokia firmware?

Vodafone Live for one??
My impressions are they completely customise the firmware with their branding and ****...

But Vodafone Live is basically a portal, isn't it . . . ? (i.e. a nicely organised set of links for customers that don't mind lapping up whatever the network feels like pushing to them)

I mean, is there anything that one fundamentally can't do without Vodafone Live?

Buggered if I know.
Havent had time to check this out myself cause they are so damned slow to deploy!!
My comments are based on reports from other people's experiences:
Nuking Voda's firmware by replacing it with Nokia's firmware on the N-series phones.

just flashed my N80 to the latest firmware (3.0617.0.6) using the cable that comes with the phone... risky but nifty. A very tense 5 minutes.

and u can use the same sotware to flash a firmware dead phone... so if ur upgrade fails halfway thru u can fix it...

I wonder if Vodacom will offer the option of an N80 with the standard nokia software i.e. none of the vodafone enhanced software...

They don't do this - if you want one w/o the vodafone s/w you have to buy it outright from Nokia. You can however take it to nokia to replace the VF FW with the standard Nokia FW but they'll probably spin you a story that its going to cost you.
