Any N95 sourced by or through Vodacom will be Vodafone branded with VLIVE firmware, don't even kid yourself that you might just get lucky with a generic handset, it ain't gonna happen!!
That's why I chose MTN.

i was about to port to vodacom.....mmmmm.....maybe i should stay yello
N95 is Free from Vodacom on Talk 500
Was reading previous posts and my contracts up in 3 months and i've already decided to switch Service Providers from Nashua to VodacomDirect (hoping this is a good move)
Questions:
What does the vodacom branding do to the N95?
Is it so bad that I should rather change Networks to MTN when porting?
Will the N95 phone still be worth it in 3 months or will there be something better?

Phones are like cars, clothes, etc. Manufactures are constantly trying to produce better products on a DAILY basis. The question is: Do u wanna strive to keep up (hence buy each and every new product) or u chose what u think will suit you and stick to it till u upgrade?
I choose the best at the time of my upgrade even if I have to pay in some and I always stick with it till contracts up for renewal (have 2 contracts)
I understand that everyday new stuff comes out, Unfortunately I don’t keep up to date with what's coming out tomorrow and wasn’t sure if the N95 going to still be the cool new kid on the block 3 months from now
1. The branding does NOTHING!!! U can still use the phone on what ever network you want!! (Assuming that u mean VodafoneLive).
2. Answered above

Branding does mess up the phone. Like c10.... said. Most of the features are taking off the phone.
The first thing you do with a branded phone is to flash it with original software.![]()

Sorry I have to disagree. Vodafone branding does a great deal to the phone. Sure you can use its basic telephony on any network, but talk to any SE P990 Vodafone owner. It turns a relatively good handset into a piece of junk! I fought tooth and nail to have the VLIVE firmware removed from mine and eventually a post to Hellopeter brought results.
VLIVE firmware is more than just a 'branding' exersize, it turns your handset into a money making machine for Vodacom and their handlers - Vodafone. The phone jumps at any oppertunity into the VLIVE premium portals (assuming you are using it on the Vodacom network) where the unsuspecting user pays dearly for viewed and downloaded content. Ridding your phone of VLIVE without reflashing can only be partially be done, but its tricky for the average user as the VLIVE is threaded into most of the configuration settings. Functionallity that does not suit Vodafone's buisness models are also disabled or removed.
The problem is that VLIVE is a cash cow for Vodacom and only a handful of users ever complain, the others simply accept their lot in life, so its highly unlikely that Vodacom will ever give up the idea of branding, and the smarter the handsets become the more intense the branding will become.
I would not be supprised is Big Yello does not follow with something similar soon!
