Nokia N96...

N96 users,
I have some questions:
1. Have you tried any n-gage games? how well do they run given that the phone has no dedicated 3d accelerator?

2. How fast is the usb file transfer? can anyone time how long it takes to copy a 1 gig or so file from pc to phone.

3. Do the call answer and hang-up buttons get in you waywhen using the phone, or are they in an awkward position?

4. Does DVB-H tv work?

I have an N95 8gb, and it's truly a great device, it's replaced my ipod, psp and pmp, and, barring a few allowances for size and batt life, I really enjoy having 1 device in my pocket.

But, what really bugs me about the phone is the very slow (12mb/s) transfer rate of the usb and the lack of a memory card.

So I want to know if these things have been improved in the N96, cos i might consider an upgrade to 1 next year.

thanks btw.

1. I haven't tried the NGage yet. I don't really play games
2. USB File Transfer is VERY fast.
3. The call answer and hang-up buttons are easily accessible but you wont press them by accident.
4. DVB-H doesnt work. Probably only in 2010.

Oh yes, did I mention anywhere that out of 50+ phones I had in my life the Xperia was the first phone that I returned because it was a failure??

Never even heard about the phone before u kept posting about it.After checking it out google, its one ugly phone though...

ok piesang, E90 or N96.

Only problem I have with the E90 is it is nearly 2 years old! But I still can't seem to find a smartphone that can compete with it.

N96 seems to be a media power house thats for sure but I miss my 9300i's kb

Thanks for the speedy reply, however, VERY FAST is not quantifiable, could you perhaps time the transfer and post when you can?
Thanks

The known problem in the NSeries range was the lack of USB speed, which stood at around 650kBps. At this rate, it would take almost seven hours to transfer 16GB of content from a device to the N96 (read and write speeds are different). Fortunately, the N96 had increased its average speed, but it was not five or six times faster, unlike what Nokia representatives had mentioned. The N96 could receive data at an average speed of 1.42mBps, slightly more than twice the speed of its predecessor Nokia N95 8GB. At this rate, 16GB of data could be written on the N96 in less than three and a half hours. Although there is an increase in speed, they are still very disappointing rates.

Hmm, seems alot faster, i transfered 4 episodes of a series to my n95 8gb and that took 20mins, the file sizes added up to 1.2gb.

maybe the data rate will increase with subsequent firmware updates.

I think the n96 will be a worthwhile upgrade when DVB-H is active here.
Or maybe the N97 will be out by then..

but then the whole touchscreen thing gets pretty old quickly...

Cool.
Local MTN shop say the X1 & E90 are hard to find, but they have n96 & E71 in stock :) Seriously considering the N95 8gb though, its going for cheap!

The N96 battery lasts a full day. With medium usage I have to play with the phone alot while lying in bed for the battery to run flat.

Im 100% sure that the 1200mah battery will last at least 2 days with medium usage and 1 full day with heavy usage.

Cool.
I have been thinking hard about what I need a phone for besides the obvious.
I have a good computer and better notebook so I think the E71 / E90 will be redundant, I cant see myself actually ever using it for browsing etc.

What I need a phone for:
GPS
Camera
iPod/mp4 player thing

So of course this points to N96 but its battery really bothers me aswell as the slow cpu, you found any sluggishness?

and the samsung innov8? .... have a look at it also, had the N95, N95-8Gig, iPhone and now the innov8 and it aint a bad piece of kit ... its symbian so its practically like using a nokia ... so far no issues, i like ... very responsive etc ...

in terms of what you want

GPS: it has route 66 with south african maps Q3 and its turn by turn for life of the phone
Camera: 8 mega pixel, a very good cam indeed
IPOD/MP4: yes it is plus divx player as well ...
