HELSINKI (Reuters) - Nokia (NOK1V.HE: Quote, Profile, Research) said a defective component in microphones, coupled with high demand, have hampered the availability of its flagship business phone, the E90 Communicator.

Background noise during phone calls, which raised customer complaints, was caused by a defective component in the microphone, spokeswoman Theresa Parenteau for Nokia Enterprise Solutions unit told Reuters on Tuesday.

"Although the issue is now rectified it has resulted in more limited availability than originally anticipated in some markets," she said.

When Nokia unveiled the phone in February 2007 it said it would start selling it in the second quarter in selected markets, with volume shipments coming in the July-September quarter.

Customers have also reported scratches on the phone screen caused by some keyboard keys touching the screen. Nokia said it has now added a strengthening layer on the screens and modified the keyboard, so the keys will not touch the screen.

The HSDPA and WLAN-enabled E90 Communicator, which features a full keyboard, retails for around 750-800 euros ($1,025-$1,093) before taxes and subsidies.

More problems with the E90

Interesting... so what happens when those who already have these devices experience these problems? i.e. Me?

So far nothing, this is a new problem they picked up the screen and buttons problem should have been replaced, but no news from Nokio yet.

Should be interesting... all my Nokia E90 stuff just arrived today... I must go pick it up at the post office.

So how will I know when I get mine if it is a new one or a old one?

I think it says E90-1 somewhere.

I remember reading somewhere that the new case will be interchangeable with the old one.

I got a new E90-1 on Friday from the "just arrived" improved batch (as per MTN) ... and guess what ... it was sent back to Nokia this morning with a battery cover that's very loose (sliding about in locked position) and with casing around the camera lens that's very poorly fitted. Nokia has to do an assessment on my phone now to see if they agree that the faults are severe enough to warrant a replacement. This can take weeks. I'm very unhappy to say the least.

The E90 is turning into a disaster for Nokia.

... did you use the phone, surely they have to replace it immediately if below certain call times.

I used it for four (4) days. MTN should replace it within seven (7) days - but now MTN says they want a Nokia assessment first as a faulty case may be considered "cosmetic" and not a system fault warranting replacement. I really hope this is sorted out to my satisfaction as I'm already involved in an 15 month long battle with MTN about 3G/HSDPA coverage in my area.

OUCH... well if the battery cover doesnt stay on then there's obviously something wrong... mine is difficult to get off.

O/T: My new cover and LCD protectors arrived today.

The battery cover stays on but it moves - a lot - on the opposite side of the lock button. When I typed I could feel the cover sliding up and down underneath ... very annoying. Definitely gave the impression that it will not last half a year ... never mind two. As a long-time Nokia user the E90 is a bit of a shock.

Mines been ok... a few restarts.. but otherwise ok... pretty sure software wise the bugs will be ironed out.

I had no software bugs - and is/was quite happy with the S60 OS (as opposed to other ex-S80 users who complain). No problems with sound quality and microphones. Just the case - at the bottom - that's not healthy.

Is it the actual battery cover? You'd think as a sign of good wil a SERVICE provider would just swap it out... I actually don't understand SA companis, they'd rather spend R1000's trying not to replace something, than pay R50 for the new part.

Where does it say E90-1 and where are photo's of the new and old case - the link earlier in this thread has no pic.
