Noob Linux DualBoot

I swapped over to the 64bit install, no problems so far. I used the "alternate install 64bit" it offers some extra features, such as native File System encryption. All very stable, no crashes yet.

This alternate install, was it an option on the normal 64 bit Ubuntu distro or is it something else altogether?

Ya, I have heard that Linux can be pretty hardware-sensitive, which is unfortunate. This pclinuxos, what is the difference between that and Ubuntu?

It's a different distro entirely, which has surpassed Ubuntu as the most-downloaded distro in recent months It's also meant to be a friendly experience, intended to make it easy for a Windows-user to switch to Linux.

Ahh, this does indeed sound promising. Do you have a linky from which I can download it locally? I tend to search for local mirrors and then they end up never working :(

Will have to check. Saw it on a few Linux mags in CNA, for R150 a pop. Dang, that's 2Gb on an Axxess voucher!

ftp.is.co.za/pub/linux/ i think it is pretty much has most distros. if not that then ftp.is.co.za/linux should be it.

The only reason its doing well it because it looks "more like windows", and some people just seem to get hung up on that. I might mention PC linux support is waining. hehe

Got a linky for that ? Would be an interesting read.

Ta,

Interesting read.

I thought *Ubuntu was streets ahead as far as popularity was concerned ....

Distrowatch counts page hits, not downloads, (which they obviously would not be able to monitor accurately). So the ranking simply tells you what other people clicked on, and their criteria are unknown to you. I often go to Distrowatch to check what versions of software are included to gauge compatibility levels between certain distros. Does that mean I use them? No. Would I switch to another distro because it's in their top 10? No, there would have to be some compelling technical reasons for that to happen.

Got my hands on a decent Windows XP copy. If I installed it on a new SATA hdd, would GRUB let me triple boot Vista, XP and Linux?

Yes, you can add more OS partitions to the Grub menu.

Q: what's a "decent Windows XP copy"?
:)

Cool, so do I install XP onto the new drive and then configure GRUB later? How does that work again?

Decent Windows XP copy is one that works all the time. Have had some issues with some previous isos...:p

Yep, install XP first. Then boot into Linux and add an entry in /etc/grub/menu.lst for the new XP OS. Do some reading on Grub, to find out how to reference the correct partition.

Cool. Sounds simple enough. Now I just need the Rand to strengthen against the dollar so I can afford the HDD I was about to buy :(

How's it going bro, you managing?

*looks very guilty*

I have been away for 10 days and when I came back I just automatically booted up in Vista :o

Got a few things I need to get sorted, which I only felt comfy doing on Vista (like transferring all sorts of data and the like). Once I have done that I will be back on the Gibbon, I promise. :o
