I was wondering how/if this will work.

If i have a Gbps switch, and 4 PC's running Gbps NIC's. Obviously the will all have 1Gbps (Running the correct cables aswell.)

Now, I want to add another two computers to the mix, but my switch is full, so I want to add another switch which is not Gbps, but a 100mbs switch. So if i take off one PC from the gigabit switch, connect the gigabit switch and the 100mb switch together, and put the now three computers on the 100mbs switch. Will the three computers be running 100mbs and the other 3 1Gbps?

Or is it really a case of your network is as slow as the slowest device?

Local switching, i.e. switching happening between ports on the same device should happening at the max speed of the port. Traffic going across the up-link between the devices will be throttled to the max speed of the slowest link, in your case 100mbps.

So yes, your assumption is correct.

Sorry for not understanding completely correct.

My assumption that the ones connected to gigabit will be gigabit, and ones connected to 100mbps will be 100mbps?

Yip, correct.
Remember though, connection speed and operating speed are two very different things. You might connect at 1Gbps, but will operate at 100Mbps if you access data across your two switches.

I understood it the same. Your speed is limited to the slowes component in that "line", but it will not be reduced if all components are gigabit in that line.

/ well this makes sense to me

Awesome. That is fine like that. Primarily what I want to do is, have 1Gbs link between my Microserver, My PC, and My HTPC, then the other devices can be 100mbs.

Thanks for the help and time

Switch .......

Why not make the new switch ALSO a Gig switch ?
or
Get a bigger single switch ( more ports )
The price difference is really small these days.

Rather keep your network speed consistent if you can afford to.

I use these. Very happy with it. But unfortunately mine is white ... I wanted it in black but couldn't wait
