Good day,

I am still learning about internet providers and how all of it works, please advise me or point me in the right direction.

I am currently on Mweb uncapped.

How do I go about downloading content? I have used bittorrent apps for a few years now and direct downloads via rapidshare etc. However, as I am increasing my downloads (mind you nowhere near what I hear some do) I am getting frustrated with download speeds. My line is meant to be 4mbs but I am only getting around .25 mb/s - .4mb/s.

Are there specific ways/servers to go through to get better download speeds?

any advise would be appreciated.

You sure you're not confusing Bytes with bits? 250 kB/s-400kB/s sounds about right for a 4 mb/s line. Max speed is 430 kB/s.

Mmm just a thought but i haven't seen torrents reach speeds more than 1mb/s on a 10mb but direct dl was 5.6mb. The 1mb/s one had a few thousand seeds.

right, OP i think got his bits and Bytes right :) 0.25mb is around 28 kilobytes and that's quite consistent with what i've been reading about these shaped accounts ...the 4 mb one specifically
all traffic that is shaped (p2p for example) will become more severely shaped the more you download. Uncapped accounts have never been for downloading, actually in their usage policy and terms you agree to not use the internet unattended at all

as for the stories one hears of folks pulling nearly 1 terabyte a month, you'll find they are probably using a virtual server to bypass the shaping. like a third party computer/service downloads the torrent and then republishes it via a protocol that is less shaped, like http for example
two things to note; bypassing the shaping is in direct violation of the terms and may result in termination of the account. and secondly the shaping seems to be dynamic and specific. so what works now won't keep on working well

@ Srack0verflow:

Thank you, so I'm not doing anything wrong unintentionally.

But concerning the kbp/s and kBp/s I have not been getting anything over 5 kBp/s off of any download in 2011 but that probably has more to do with the amount of seeders than anything else, my download interests seem to be getting more and more obscure :)

Aren't there local repositories that can be used that Mweb doesn't shape traffic too?

Concerning Gaming:

I'm going to get back into online gaming soon, my most played game will be SC2 which is pretty low bandwidth wise, do you guys think it will work on Mweb uncapped?
If not what are my options if I had to get a separate line for my personal use?

Thanks again for all the help.

You're talking absolute k@k. He's with MWeb. They don't operate like that. For the 7000th time. Mweb has their problems like everyone else, but please get your facts straight.

Ok TJ99, but add some value to the discussion then. Srack0verflow's post is not the OP...

I wasn't talking about sracoverflow, I meant the OP, you said you're with Mweb. And Mweb don't shape according to your amount of data transfer, it's only dependant on the network load. They've said so themselves, even on this forum, many, many times. So you might get slower speeds sometimes even if you haven't downloaded a lot, or you might get full speed even after doing hundreds of GB's.

They also don't mind you running download managers (or "using the internet unattended", whatever the hell that means), I've heard some other ISP's do (which is insane IMO). It's not in their conditions and I've confirmed it numerous times with them over the phone. Just don't run a server on it. Common sense really.

MY GOD I HATE TROLLS!

You're (meaning Srack0verflow... because you quote him and are replying to his particular post) talking absolute k@k. He's (that be me... since I'm the one on Mweb, the one who Srack0verflow was talking to... who also turns out to be the OP) with MWeb.

I wasn't talking about sracoverflow, I meant the OP....:wtf: do you even know who you are talking too? you said you're with Mweb. And Mweb don't shape according to your amount of data transfer... I never said they shape it... time to read the OP for a change... So you might get slower speeds sometimes even if you haven't downloaded a lot, or you might get full speed even after doing hundreds of GB's... I run bandwidth test... I read actual download speed next to download on a variety of apps... I post my findings in OP... I make no claims in OP... I ask question...

• You may not use service for unattended automated operation, unless otherwise agreed. You may stay connected as long as you are actively using that connection. You further agree not to use Internet applications for the purpose of simulating network activity to avoid session inactivity disconnection.

perhaps it's time to see the fanboi eye-doctor

Anyway, back to the main topic... any thoughts guys?

ok torrents will be slow, you should get up to 150kbs after 12 am, is what i get on mine.

filesharing get shaped but no so insaner should be able to max your line with say 4 threads.

or you can buy news server 15 dollars for the decent ones, which you can download nzb files at a nice speed :)

pm me if you need to know a decent news server , if you want to go that route.

a news server you also need torrent type of file to start the download. in this case its nzb files.

but you download from a server not users, so almost like direct download, without hassles of entering keys etc.

mweb offers a free one which is news.mweb.co.za, which will download cached content at full speed, cached if someone else have download it before you.

you need program to download these files, go google grabit, download it server details news.mweb.co.za.

files you can get at nzbsa.co.za, you will need inv for that site,, free sites is nzbmatrix, you can try as well.

this just basics , someone can give you full explanation, later if they want to :P

@nicolaasdekker - A news server in and of itself won't necessarily increase download speeds.

Check out the sig of a user on mybb called Garyvdh, he has a useful link in there on usenet (news servers) which explains more.

gotta love the UseNet hey :) tried and tested technology that was invented over 20 years ago, if not more. ppl abandoned it because up to recently before the invention of indexing the various articles that make up an item in a .nzb, the only thing you could easily get hold of thru it was porn and spam. Gary did a great job at explaining how to use it in his blog, well worth the read. however before going and subscribing to a premium service i'd suggest you'd first try it out with the free sever your ISP provides access to.

touching on your earlier question about online gaming: i can't really comment on that as my experience has been limited to the odd MMO on a closed source private server and poker, neither of which is very dependent on latency. that said i assume mweb's fine for RTS style games because an outstanding ping doesn't matter that much with those kinds of games either. i must say mweb shines at the pc version of Black Ops FPS amongst their own peers here in S.A.
i'll stop boring you with details now ;)

Thank You Srack0verflow! you have been most helpful!

Used to be a hardcore SC and CS player back in the day, and from my experience playing Modern Warfare (don't know how quick others played through the single player but it took me 4hrs on hard.. was kinda disappointed but multiplayer really shined through) when it came out I have a good knack for it so it is good to know that if I want to feed my fps cravings that my connection will be fine. But SC2 and Diab3 will most probably be my mainstays for the next decade to come :)

Now all I need is someone to sell me their i5 760 processor! my rig is rearing to go but rectron dropped me when they got rid of almost all their 1156 offerings to make way for SBridge!

i'm not too sure how mweb will preform with first person shooters other than black ops though. mweb actually hosts the local black ops server. i've heard of servers hosted locally for the other older FPSs, but i see problems because not everyone wants to peer with mweb.

btw guys, still only saix being hardegat wrt the peering?
