Hey guys,
Been browsing through the forums for an hour or so now, but still find it hard to make a choice and even understand half the technical words flying around. I am not so clued up with the whole ISP, line speeds and stuff and would like a personal opinion.

I do my fair share of torrent downloads and play games online(both pc and xbox).
I am cuurently on an Axxess uncapped 384. I would like to increase my line speed(for obvious reasons), they also shape my line quite vigorously and it gets frustrating.

I just cant handle the fact that i cant play online while busy downloading..
As a complete package, what is recommended? i dont mind going to capped if needed.

Thanx

Go to Openweb GOLD. Keep your line with telkom though.

it is yeah, well, I'm willing to go up to say R500 give or take, excluding line rental.. i had a look at openweb gold, but seems a little expensive..

Is it worth it to stay with axxess and Telkom and just bump my line and data up to 1024?

Analogue rental or both analogue and DSL?

Bumping up to 1mbps will make it R326 for the DSL line, leaving about R174 for your ISP (assuming analogue rental is excluded). Don't think you can get uncapped for that.

MWeb's 1mb uncapped is the cheapest at the moment, they offered at their 512kb prices, so it's R599 with line rental. But of course the network might not be the best for you. You can try a test account with MWeb and if it works well, that's the cheapest.

Otherwise OpenWeb gold 1mb? If such a thing exists.

Thanx for the help guys,

Steven, so do you think it is worth it to go for this option?
I am willing to pay those prices.

Well I'd say this is the best option if the 4Meg option is too expensive. Any upgrade from Axxess uncapped 384 would be much better.

So if I understand things correctly from what i read about Telkom's products. If I take a 512 line from them, they'll automatically bump it up to 1meg? If so, I think for now I'll do that till my budget improves..

Thanx once again

I downgraded from a 384k unshaped account at the beginning of the month and the difference is pretty huge.

I am and was using Openweb Gold and cannot believe the lag and general sluggishness of shaped.

A P2P 350 meg download which previously took just under 3 hours takes around 7 or 8.

Browsing whilst downloading is now far far slower then it was, and i just don't bother anymore.

I am moving so im using the shaped account at my parents in the meantime and i tell you i regret downgrading to save a few quid.

If i were you i would trial an Openweb Gold 384 unshaped account and then increase your line speed if necessary, because if you are on a budget, unshaped could make all the difference.(It did for me);)

Definitely, haven't used 1mbps gold but 384k gold is a very good service, never have any complaints like some users on this forum have about other ISPs. You don't have to sign a contract so try it out for a month and then reevaluate after that if you're not happy.

Interesting post. Never looked at gold unshaped before but I see 384k unshaped is R150 more than 1mbps shaped. Bizarre if your 384k unshaped is faster than 1mbps shaped.

trying the 384 gold as a trial run, so far its been a MAJOR upgrade from Crapxxess. Will see, even spend that little bit more money and go up to a gold unshaped 384 later when the budget allows..

I just went back to the Gold Unshaped(from shaped)and the difference for me is huge as P2P and browsing are fast vs sluggish and laggy.

Just tried to play BC2, got kicked once for high ping and DCed twice from connection.. mmm, this never happened on my previous ISP...

Might be related to the backbone you're on. Send an email to ceo at openweb.co.za and they should be able to put you on a better one if available.
