Noob's guide to purchasing demo models?

Hi All,

Apologies if a similar thread already exists.

Any tips, tricks, things to watch out for, no-go's, do's, don'ts when it comes to buying a demo vehicle from a dealership?
Any feedback would be appreciated!

What qualifies as a demo?

The car used at a static display at a shopping mall or whatever?
The car used to take prospective buyers for test drives?
The car used by various sales persons or other assorted staff at the dealer for a few months then sold off?

Actually could be all 3 of those, but they should specify which one it is when you purchase. But it shouldn't smell of smoke, the sales person should be dragged through for that.
 
1 thing I would look at is the price of the demo vs the price of a new vehicle less discount. People don't haggle enough for discount on a new car.

Cause it's not actually very easy to haggle on the price on new cars.

True, but not impossible. When I bought my car at my local dealer, he first quoted me the website price. I mailed a few dealers, got a price on e-mail 15% cheaper, took it to my local dealer who decided to match that price.

Took me about 5 e-mails to save a lot of money. For about the same price or lower than a demo I got a brand new car.

A friend worked for a local manufacturer as an engineer, and his company car was replaced every 6 months with a new one. The old ones are apparently sold as demo models.
He took decent care of his cars, and got the initial quality issues, like that one electric window button that didn't work, fixed.
The fact is, that there are plenty of people who will drive the car that's not theirs, as if they they will get a new one in six month's time, because that's exactly what will happen.

Mine was used for test drives but also as a personal vehicle for one sales person.

I think if I had known that I might have reconsidered.

And used for fetching hay and horse feed for the farm...

Maybe not haggle, but choose your dealership carefully, they all have different prices for the same new cars. So the East and West Rand is usually cheaper than Sandton. As a rule of thumb,the closer you get to the sticks, the cheaper it is.

Get it in writing when the service or maintenance plan starts and ends. Even the ones used for display purposes may have been 'sold' (often for dealers to reach targets) affecting how much of the plan you can use.
