I have an 8ta card for data and it is one of those specials locked out of roaming. Where I stay, my Cell C gets kak signal so I can't rely on it and have an MTN number for calls at home. I am told that 8ta roams on MTN's network where 8ta is dead - is this true? If I port to 8ta, will I still have the same coverage then that I have with MTN?

http://www.8ta.com/coverage/

The network offered is a full 2G / 3G network in both the 1800 and 2100 MHz bands. There is general coverage in the 6 major metropolitan areas and overlay coverage provided by MTN on an initial national roaming agreement until all sub-urban and rural areas are sufficiently covered by our own network. The network utilises the latest in global mobile telecommunications technology, thus facilitating a full IP topology and allowing for the leveraging of the world class copper and fibre infrastructure that Telkom has to offer.

Initial services will include packages catering for full voice and data connectivity, with a 7.2 Mbps data service available on launch, with the capability to immediately ramp up to HSPA+. All customer equipment available at launch will thus also have HSPA+ functionality, allowing for the consumer to grow seamlessly with the network.

Thanks AcidRaZor and hambone!

You are 100% correct. There are 2 coverage maps. The one you have mentioned shows both 8ta and MTN coverage. The other map shows 8ta only tower coverage which can be seen here: http://www.8ta.com/coverage/8tanetwork/

Unless I am completely lost, you posted the same link? >_>

We have posted the same link... and it was posted around the same time. If you need clarification, please advise what is not clear.

Thanks guys - all very useful. Now the best would be to take my data card and see how it performs in calling circumstances in my dead areas and then decide.

No problem :)

Let us know how it goes?

Well - let's say MTN is fast becoming an endangered species. Did a few tests and the 8ta signal was as strong as MTN. A few voice calls and the clarity was as useable.

Which means it is time to go about porting. Years ago, when the mobile networks introduced capable data, people were cheering and excited because finally Telkom's monopoly had a threat. It is ironic then that the very two responsible for introducing "competition" into the data market so long ago remain the most uncompetitive in that field. Time to leave them in the dust. So, how do I port....

Are cell-phone users "normal"?

Perhaps I should have said "voice" - the forum section is called 8ta Broadband | HSPA+, 3G, EDGE, GPRS and BIS so I wanted to differentiate from that. But I think yes, cell phone use has become the norm. Finding anything normal on MBB, however, is a near-impossible challenge :D

We are all abnormal here. Some users have keyboards, you can tell from the spelling, but some dictate their answers direct and hope their device translates it properly

Hi GreGorGy!

In order to port when on contract, you can visit any one of our stores. Bring along a Copy of your ID/Passport, Proof of Banking Details, 3 months bank statement, payslip and proof of residence. An account from your current service provider would assist with the application.

In order to port when on prepaid, all we need is a copy of your ID and proof of residence and we will do the rest :)

Before porting, you may want to test the service first.

I did test and am more than happy to leave MTN in the dust. Sad really, considering how long I worked with them. Still, if they point blank refuse to bring anything new to the market, I will take something old (myself) out of their market. I have my ID and proof in my car and will be porting the next chance I get - prepaid, of course, due to my contractaphobia...

Well you are most welcome on our network. If you have any problems, you know where to find us :)
