At least 36,000 ghost employees have been drawing a combined amount of R19-billion in salaries in North West, the ANC in the province said on Wednesday.

“These ghost employees have been undetected and exhausting the slim annual salary budget,” said provincial secretary Dakota Legoete.

“The revelation of this unlawful salary diversion to no existing civil servants followed the investigations led by Comrade Supra Mahumapelo who instructed the verification of every government employee in the province’s salary payment system.”

North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo revealed the figure of 36,000 ghost workers at a Scopa meeting earlier on Wednesday.

Legoete said Mahumapelo’s revelations would save the North West government millions of rand.

The DA reacted with shock the revelations of the ghost workers.

“Ghost officials are not new to the North West provincial government – in 2008 millions of rands (were) spent on consultants to develop a system that was supposed to eradicate the problem. Now, only seven years later, it seems that was a fruitless exercise and a waste of taxpayers’ money, which must be condemned as throwing good money after bad,” said DA caucus leader Chris Hattingh.

Hattingh said it was shocking and unacceptable that ghost workers received pension benefits and medical aid funds.

We had a payroll guy slip a few ghosts into our system, took 2 years to figure it out and then only because we changed the clocking system.

Its interesting that they do not talk about how much these people would cost or where the money is going.

But think about this.

At a minimum salary of R100 000 per year, that is 36 000 * 100 000, that is 3 600 000 000

R3.6 billion per year, MINIMUM.

How many schools could you build for that? Or universities?

That would have paid for the highway upgrades.

EDIT: Nevermind, I see they mention R19 billion, so the average salary per employee is over R500 000! Even worse.

No if you tried really hard you'd realise that there is no justification for being racist. You are racist and you're trying to use this to justify your already entrenched notions. Corruption doesn't have a race and your argument is weak.
