Norton update or AVGfree

My Norton just expired. What would you recommend?
 
Avast... or AVG.. avast best. Nortons is terrible, dont bother with it.
 
Free Stuff to recommend:

I use this the last year, great antivirus..it's small, nice interface..doesn't bug me..doesn't slow my system down etc. I never
liked AVG and AVG feels alot more bloated compared to Avast.

Firewall : Comodo -> http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
Best firewall you'll get, it beats even all the top "pay for" firewalls. What i love about this one is you can -clearly- see which apps is connecting where and downloading/uploading how much. So if i have 5 tabs open in firefox, one downloading a streaming movie from youtube..i can see it down to that detail in this firewall.

If you're willing to pay, i went for

Agnitum Outpost Security Suite 2009 [Firewal+Antivirus] -> http://www.agnitum.com
Their firewall is the best i could find, and the 2009 suite is actually very nice on the memory . +-R400 for a year subscription (3 PC license). It's best of both worlds , the interface is better than the 2 seperate free stuff above.

Just for those that's curious , this dude has been putting private/personal firewalls through all kinds of serious tests , quite scary the results:

And yes the results are pretty up to date ;) . Norton/Mcafee...look where they are...only Kaspersky [of the well known brands] surface as remotely decent. Comodo being the best free firewall.

For Paid go for NOD32 (R356)

or

For Free go for AVG or Avast.
 
I read quite a few complaints about the AVG upgrade to 8. Rather go for Avast i reckon.

I've been with AVG for since, for long.... but wont be upgrading to 8.
 
AVG have supposedly sorted out the problems in version 8.

I think you will be happy with the free version!

Anything but Norton... Norton is a beast!
 
Avira is -very- annoying with the advertisements. While it's normally actually cool antivirus , but it pops the ad -everytime- you update the virus database...in most cases it's every day. And the add is not a small little thing, it's like a full screen thing.
So yea, i see there's a tip to stop that, so maybe it's worthwhile then.

A requirement for me is that an antivirus should be out of my face, if i constantly know about it [and it's not finding virusses] it's bad ;).

But yea, Avira is definitely very lightweight. AVG is very bloated compared to this.

Im using AVG free seems to do a good job on both xp and vista...was on iolo and was shocked to find out AVG had picked up viruses iolo didnt....
 
Sorry I am only responding now. Thanks for all the advice. So I can run more than one antivirus on my machine?

And then I need to use another firewall? I think Windows Bit Defender is what I have at the moment. I can't recall if this has also expired.

Sure, your 32 core super machine with solid state ram based drives should handle multiple antivirus instances just fine

Otherwise with standard rigs, i strongly advise against it.

Well you can, but that's just stupid and a waste of your ram and resources. Worst case, the 2 Antivirus conflicts and hang up your system, best case they both scan each file coming in TWICE in relative peace.

As for firewall, if you want a good solid free one : Comodo Firewall is of the best out there. http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com

However, you generally need a Antivirus -and- Firewall. There's a few integrated solutions [BitDefender being one of them, Norton etc]. Up to you. I use
Agnitum Internet Security Suite ...which is not free but is the full package [anti-ads,anti-spyware,anti-virus,firewall etc etc].

Sorry for posting out of turn , but think you might find this interesting.

My laptop came with free norton for 3months.I purchased norton 360 ontop of that which has data backup(which I didnt use) ect .

Anyway - after 3 months the software update/reminder started telling me everythings expired and the reminders became more aggressive- I didn't stress and a patch confirmed I hadn't expired BUT before that, The simple reminder to renew subscription became a clear threat that they would delete all my data in Backup if I didn't pay immediately or something like that! So don't trust them. I plan to uninstall before it expires.
 
wow! thats quite a threat. And you probably missed that fine print when you accepted the initial licence agreement. who reads that stuff anyway?

So i'll go for Comodo and one of the 2 or 3 anti-v's. I wonder if there's a poll on here or somewhere for me to choose 1 cos they all seem to do the job.

I must check my defender licence period also!
